Rolex Case Question

What is the black dotted stamp on the opposite side of the crown on the newer model Rolex case? I would assume that's part of the protective plastic seal that can be peeled off and not on the actual case?
If it's part of the watch, when did it start? I have a V serial 116710 that does not have it...

Here's a link to what I'm talking about: http://rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=176527

That actually raises a good point...

Does that mean it'd be a good idea to keep that barcode sticker if you have a random number serial?

Great thought, but how do you scan the code to find out it's production date? Take it to an AD? Or can you buy a scanner yourself.

Likely any smart phone would have an app to scan it. I have barcode scanners on my iPhone that seem to handle all types. Never tried to scan a Rolex tho.

the barcode probably only works in the factory and it probably only contains information like - dial model, bracelet, and case ID.

I would just remove it ... it is worthless and those who leave it on need to take it off
