Rolex woes, TRF experts advice sought

No better place to get advice on Rolex...so here goes:

My daughter's TT Sub stopped during the night, a few days after we purchased it. The AD were great and had it a week, completely stripping it down, apparently. They returned it to us (having driven to our house to collect and drop off), very apologetic and helpful, only for it to stop again. They have offered a full refund. I reckon something is really wrong with the watch. And I am mightily confused that it stopped again, even after a good strip down. I have manual wound it and when it works, it is as accurate as my Ceramic TT, which is so supreme, it beggars belief; I set it to the electronic bell timer in my school and it loses or gains zero seconds. Her watch is as accurate, when it is running. Really weird.

We are going in today to discuss options. The AD is really good and understand how frustrating it is. They have offered to return it to Rolex for a full monty service at no charge to us. 4 months wait, though and she's had the watch a week! They may even lend her a watch in the meantime, which is above and beyond exceptional support.

What would you do? Refund? I got a great deal on the watch as I know the Manager very well and there are no hard feelings at all and I would buy from them again. We'll take a look at the Sub C which he has offered at a crazy, unheard of discount and maybe a TT DJ. She loves the Bluesy, though. Failing that, we'll be on the look out for a Bluesy or black TT Sub on here...one that works flawlessly, or perhaps even a Pepsi. I am in NYC in 2 weeks time and may think about something there.

I would really value your advice folks. I'm going in at 3pm GMT and it's nearly 11am now.

It's a 2001 watch, btw.

Michael.

First any Rolex needs a full manual wind around 40 full crown turns clockwise, then it must be worn for at least 8 -10 hours a day with reasonable wrist activity to keep its power reserve. Now you could try after a full manual wind watch should run off wrist for around 39-48 hours. But if it stops before you have a problem or after winding and wearing it as normal too.It could be a weak mainspring or the auto wind mechanism do the test first if then a problem send it back to AD.

If they are offering a refund I'd return it and get another one. Cheers to your AD though, usually we read horror stories here whereas yours seems quite the opposite.

I'd take a refund\credit and buy something else from your AD. They sound like a lovely, very supportive AD and I would be happy to keep dealing with them.

If they are offering a full service from RSC at no charge to you, AND a loaner while it is away??? That is a no-brainer IMHO. Take the service. Your 2001 model will come back as a brand-new watch, good to go for another 100k miles.

Returning it for service seems to be the answer at face value, but doesn't always fix the problem. In the early 90s I had a Sub, that I bought brand new, that was a "lemon"; I lost track of how many times I returned it to RSC and it continued to occasionally run backwards.

With all that said, my vote is a refund.

A full RSC service will come with a 2 year warranty. If this was a good deal from the AD, I would do the service.

Just as bad as loosing TEVEZ!!!

Hi Mike, I commented on your post when you just bought the watch. From one City fan to another,The same thing is happening to me. I purchased a Pepsi,GMT about 6 weeks ago, and it stopped so many times even 30~40 winds and it would still only run for about half an hour before stopping. This was purchased with a service warranty and it also is a 2001 model. However, they have a new service centre in Kent,so i was told waiting times are a lot quicker than before.I am being told that its the main hairspring, thats the problem, but i cant understand why this was not done at the service.I suppose give them a chance to rectify the problem,as the bluesey is a stunner.Best wishes for the new season, Colin.
