The other Explorer II .......
Since the Expl II seems to be flavour of the month .. What about the cream dialed Expl II ?
When was this produced ? Serial ? How many were made ? Collectable and used value ? Any nice pics ? |

Believe it was only the first year or two it came out 1986-1988.
Had white gold hour outlines and white gold hands, not painted black. Don't like the white gold hands, hour markers - but I love the cream dial!!!!! |

I think the reference 16550 EXP II CREAM is one of those pieces which we still don't have all the answers to yet (if we ever do in the vintage arena LOL!)
There was a time when collectors felt the only true creams were rail dials, but it seems recently non-rails have been verified as having cream dials. Sadly this seems to be a very popular watch to fake as there have been those that have attempted to bake the dials in an effort to change the color to cream. Most feel the cream color came about due to a flaw in the paint used by Rolex causing the dial to turn. I have no idea of the numbers made. Some collectors feel that late 9 mil. was a safe bet, but it seems some have come to light with R ser. nos. that have been verified. Pricing I'd say is in the 12Kish range loose, perhaps up to 16K B&P, but the way vintage pricing has been who knows. While the 1655 gets a lot of press (and it is a sweet watch! ) far fewer creams were made. Not my photo, |

Great pic & info Mike, saw one (enroute to RSC for service) at my AD back in April, it was gorgeous.
I'm almost certain that the unpainted WG hands & markers work better with the cream than they would with the original crisp white. |

Truly,
one of the most beautiful, uncomplicated, watch dials on the face of the planet. |
