New Member with a GMT question

Thank you for having me on this forum. I have already learned a bunch!

May I have some advice, oh wise ones?

I am 47 years old and am in sales with one of the world's largest chemical companies. I have owned Seiko, Sinn, Omega, and TAG. Looking for my first Rolex and love the GMT. Should I try to get the newest available for better features, movements, solid end links, etc? (Budget is around $4500 so Ceramic bezels are out.

I think the 40 year old vintage ones are cool but I dont necessarily like the faded look. Vintage is OK as long as it is cleaned up. I also want to be able to take it in the pool, lake, etc. since it will be my only watch.

I have my eye on vintage ones like this:

http://forums.timezone.com/index.php...=5810102&rid=0

and this newer one is my home town:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/280732550496...84.m1438.l2649

I missed this one sold by a TRF member:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rolex-SS-GMT...item2567282438

What would be your advice? Should I have posted this rambling post somewhere else?

Thank you in advance!

Andy

Welcome to TRF.

You will ultimately have to decide what works best for you, however it appears as you are leaning towards a later version based on your description.

I also recomend taking a look at the following website prior to deciding:

I know the first watch. I have seen many high res pics of it's dial. You will not find a nicer example. That's one thing I hate, you buy a vintage watch you get it in the mail and there is a spot on the dial or a scratch or something. I can vouch for the watches condition. Now if that's the model for you, I don't know but you couldn't have stumbled across a better example.
Some prefer lug holes some like the newer stuff. Some like Sapphire crystal some like acrylic.
I personally love vintage and have owned both. Now that I have vintage I can never see myself going back.

I will surely buy and own other Rolex watches but for my hard earned money I like the looks, the resale and the history of the vintage models.
You are on the right path. Look at all your options, compare all the different models and if you end up pulling the trigger on one and second guessing yourself you probably can turn around and sell it for what you paid for it since it's a Rolex.

And Welcome!!!

Welcome to TRF!

May I suggest the 16710 GMT II. You can find preloved versions w/ solid end links and lug holes, best of vintage and modern. You will also have the ability to change bezels [pepsi, coke, all black] and bracelets [oyster and jubilee].

GMTII vs GMTII-c continues...

Hello Andy,

I've been researching this same question for the last few weeks:

-Older GMT II vs new shiny Stainless GMTII-C. Check out the posts submitted by me and you'll see plenty of banter from me, and great advice from the Watch Savants who live in this forum... I have been obsessing, posting photo's, and visiting used Rolex shops, and Authorized dealers in southern california.

I am still on the fence, though at 7:20 PM this evening I am leaning towards the newer model. Good luck on your search.. .
