36 mm vs 40 mm

I know you guys are always talking about how small the Date Just and Day Date are compared to the sport models. Here is my experience with both. I wear the smaller watch and at first it looks very small. After a few days it looks normal. I then put on my Sub, GMT or YM it looks huge. I think it comes down to what you think looks good on your wrist at the time. This said, I would love to see Rolex bump up their dress models a couple mm. I do think it's what you are wearing at the time.

JJ don't worry, it's not that small, really, when you wear it for a while

true....
my 2 watches are very different in sizes. my full size yacht master is of course 40 mm and my cartier tank francaise is much smaller ( i think its 25mm by 30mm) and alot thiner..
each watches has its own appeal. the cartier is probably more streamlined and not bulky.... but i was real excited when i got my YM ... i feel like i get what my money is worth

Agreed!

A watch always looks bigger on someone else too.

The size difference is even more noticeable with other watches like my Panerai. But I prefer the Sub LV because it is more comfortable for extended wear. I wear the Panerai for short days - like the weekend when I am tooling around in the convertible.

God curse you and put you into an eternal fire. There is no reason, asthetic or mechanical, for making the new GMT any bigger than the new Turnograph...36 mm. The new YM is the most absurd piece of horological bs since the birth of Harry Winston.

A dive watch might need more case for depth pressure...but 38mm has proven more than sufficient. Anything bigger than that is like stuffing sweatsocks in your speedo.

Quality doesn't have to be "heavy" anymore than beauty means "fat."

I now carry a hidden hammer...and when I see someone with a larger than 38mm watch, I praise it and ask if I can see it...hold it. When they give it to me, I pull out the hammer and smash it.

So all you big watch people, beware...you can never be sure when it might be me complimenting your BIG watch.

that could be an expensive pursuit, but I guess you don't have to pay for your living costs behind bars and that new 40mm Milgauss that I was going to give you well, I guess I'll just have to keep that for myself.

I'm sorry (well not really) to say that I do like both, a lot.

To put all of the above in a single nutshell....the DJ would be PERFECT at 38 mm - no more, no less!!

Or perhaps like cramming Kleenex into one's bra (for us women out here?)

I have tried on the new DJ and it does not look small on my 7½ " wrist.

I'm happy with a 40mm watch. I don't think I'd want it any bigger. If I decide I want a bigger watch, I'll get a 44mm Panerai.

I agree with JJ. I do think the Date Just and Day Date look just fine but as I said if they bumped it up from 36 to 38 mm it would be great, not too big, not too small.

Size issues...

Size is a relative thing. I am 6' 5" and 275. My 40mm Sub doesn't look big or gaudy on me. I also have a 45mm Breitling Emergency. It is big and thick. On my wrist it looks a little bigger than average, but not "foolish". In fact, when I put my Sub back on, it almost looks petite.

On my big fat wrist, 38mm looks like I'm wearing a child's watch...

I must have big, big, big watches!

If I would make my GMT and Sub 45mm I would be extatic!

36mm DateJust looks fine on my 7.5 wrist, the 40mm SD looks fine on my wrist, my recently departed Chrono Avenger at 44mm also looked good on my wrist.

Heck even ladies with petite wrists are wearing 40mm watches - big or small, depends on how comfortable you are wearing your time piece.

I once bought a 1960s Vacheron Constantin dress watch from the USA for a very good price. It was advertised as 36mm exc crown.

When it arrived it turned out to be 33mm and looked like a birthmark on my wrist.

Luckily for me I only lost tens of pounds when I did the australian dolphin thing.

I can kind of see where John is coming from on this. The primary reason for the wristwatch was to have a convenient, accurate alternative to the pocketwatch. To get bigger and bigger is for appearance only. Where will it all end, with a freakin' alarm clock strapped to our wrists? Given our obsession with size, perhaps it's a freudian thing? Having said that, I just can't both sweatsocks, it's over the top!
