Is a watch winder pointless?

Hello all, I wanted to find out what everyone thinks of watch winders. I own one but I've been wondering if they're worth it off late?

What got me on this line of thinking is the local watch dealers. They have automatic watches sitting in glass cases, sometimes for years, which see absolutely no movement, so the movement never gets any sort of workout. Would these watches prove troublesome to anyone who buys them later, given that they are automatic models and just sit without any sort of movement, be it a wrist or a winder?

I'm curious about this because I've been wondering whether or not to buy a bigger watch winder since I now have three Omegas.

Please weigh in with your thoughts. Thanks!

Not worth it to me.

Why wear them out riding on a winder, besides setting them when rotating them is all a part of the fun.

I have argued this out on many a forum, that for a simple non complicated movement like a Rolex,a watch winder is not needed.

I'd only consider using a winder on an annual calendar or perpetual calendar where setting them is time consuming and they didn't get enough wrist action to keep wound (assuming they're automatics and not manual). Otherwise winders are a waste of money.

I had a small single Orbita for a couple years, but with so many watches, it was 'what's the point' after awhile. So I sold it and don't miss it at all.

Cheers,

If you have a few perp or annual cals then I can see the point. Why people with one or two Rolexes buy a winder really cracks me up. a total waste of $$$. I probably wouldn't own one if I had 50 watches. I saw a person buying a manual wind Pam once saying he already had a winder for it.... The salesman did try to set him straight but he said it could still go on the winder at night.....

This will always be a debate among collectors. I personally like to use a winder.

"pointless" is the wrong word. It works just fine with watches, it's just not a necessity.

Winders...

I have two small wolf winders for my gmtII and Sub16800. This week I decided to put the winders away and try to keep the rotation going without them. So far so good, I especially like the convenience of having the watches on the counter, ready to go.

Pulling the watches out of the winder now seems like a wasted step each morning... My neighbor needs two watch winders for gifts, I might just sell them to her...

For some reason doesn't work well with my 5070, Duometre QL, or my Dato?

Yes indeed! I even caught myself waiting for my mechanical watches to stop just to wind them up and set them properly! Setting my full calendar Ingersoll is a real pleasure.

They never work real well with manual movements!

I'm a winder kind of guy. IMHO if you have more than one automatic watch, it's a huge convenience to have all watches "ready to wear" all time. At the morning when I'm sleepy but in a rush, I'd hate to fiddle with winding and setting the watch I pick to wear. And as others mentioned, with an annual or perpetual calendar the winder is highly recommended.

The only kind of watch where I wouldn't mind setting it everytime I put it on would be a non-date model with no screw-down crown. I've already ruined a screw-down crown tube by too much and too careless handling, so I would definitely not want to screw out and screw in more than once a month...

I'll be wearing my watches on a monthly rotation, not going to bother with a winder, only takes me 1 min to adjust the time and date and give it an initial wind to get it going.

Some very interesting comments guys, thanks! I think I may just skip looking to upgrade to a bigger watch winder since they aren't a necessity. Good news is that cash can go towards a nice new watch :).

All depends really, convenience? Yes. Necessity other than watch types mentioned? No. Cool toy factor? Yes.

I'm not sure about pointless. I have a couple I seldom use and then only for convenience. I'd agree with those that feel there's a place for them with a watch with several complications.

Perhaps you should try reversing the direction . Keep experimenting Ken, you'll get it.

I guess I'm in the minority on this issue, as I have two quad winders and love them. I agree that it's unnecessary for simple movements, but they're quite handy for larger collections with a lot of rotation going on (no pun intended) and includes annual or perpetual calendars, moon phases, etc.
