Anyone actually dislike manual winds?
I've only ever had automatic watches and wouldn't mind a manual wind.
But I feel as busy as I get I would constantly forget to wind my watch if I'm rotating others depending on what I'm doing. Anyone actually regret buying a manual wind? I feel like buying a little Stowa or something to see if I'll remember to wind it on time. I know it takes minimal time and I swear I'm not as lazy as I sound. Just forgetful and extremely busy. |

Manual wind is "different".
You will feel more connected because I have to spend more time winding it. I have forgotten to wind it a few times in the past..... |

I much prefer manual winds!! Not only the connection to the watch and joy in winding but the beauty of fully exposed movement not covered up by a piece of metal. For me there is just no comparison.
PS. many of the higher end watches are manual including most of my prized pieces.

I love mine. I wind all of my watches before wearing them and usually rotate them, so it makes no difference at all.

They're definitely at the pinnacle I'm just wondering if I'll always forget or just get used to winding semi-frequently. |

Actually it becomes habit and I look forward to winding them first thing in the morning as I enjoy my coffee!! I have never forgotten as I only have one watch out at a time and it again becomes habit. I always wind at same time every day early a.m.

Manual winds are very nice.
I only have one, but the connection one immediately makes with such a watch is a much more intimate one as compared to automatics. The issue with manual winds is that they do not particularly like getting wet, it is always best to avoid water coming over the crown when wearing such a timepiece.

I wear manual wind more than automatic for probably peculiar psychological reasons that lack much basis in fact. I've only got 1950s watches at the moment & I can't help feeling that the rotor swinging around all the time, especially when running about, must be causing more wear.
Like I said, it's probably just my odd psychology though... |

Me too.
And, if you develop a relationship with a highly skilled old school watchmaker, well, the limits of a collection can become almost limitless. For the price of a new stainless steel XXXX, a person can build a solid collection of dream references from the likes of JLC, Patek Philippe, Vacheron and even Rolex. One of the many advantages of being from Brooklyn, NY is having access to serious old world watchmakers who can break down and rebuild a 50 year old movement in their sleep. |

I really like manual wind watches. I like the interaction.
I wind my autos anyway. Got several winders. Don't even use them for complications these days.

I started with a GMT, 35 years ago, and always assumed an auto with date would be the only watch for me. Decades later I picked up a handful of manual wind watches (Speedy, 3 vintage GP's, and a Maurice Lacroix) and couldn't be happier. Since I'm rotating several watches during a month, I'm often restarting them, so manual wind is no problem. I actually kind of prefer non-date watches when rotating them, too.
If I had to limit myself to one daily wear watch, it would still be auto with date, since I would rarely let it come to a full stop. |

My prized pieces aren't in the same league as yours Ken and they do not have a display case back but I think there's nothing like a good manual winding chronograph... ...Let alone a rather old vintage cushion shaped watch... ...And what about a clock?

It takes seconds to set a simple manual wind
I just set them when I put them on and wind them then. Only watches I have on winders are non quick set or have more complications than just a date.

I have a few and enjoy winding them. However, I'm glad mine have power reserve indicators.

Can't understand how you'd forget to wind?
You quickly get a feel for how much you need to wind to last a 10-12 hour day & then only wind that much. That way, when you next come to wear the watch, be it the next day or a week later, it will have stopped & the need to set time & wind will be obvious. |

There's just something romantic and harmonious about a manual wind. Imho every collection isn't complete without some type of manual whether it's a 1861 Speedy, Unitas base, or something more. Not to mention resale of the higher end manual winds is more stable than automatic.

I enjoy my manual winds.. 'cuz they are from my Dad (his Elgin) and Grandfather's Hamilton 'Boulton'.....
Wind them periodically to keep the movement functional...!! --- . Oh, and a Gruen, I picked up locally a while ago...!!
