Cyclops or No Cyclops

Have been debating if I should change the crystal on my Explorer II to another one without the cyclops feature. I personally think it would look better.

There are times when the magnification isn't clear. You have to catch it at certain angles to be able to have a clear view. What do you guys think?

You can remove the cyclops on your current one!

Go with whatever pleases you the most. Personally think the cyclops is not the prettiest on dials and prefer the unspoilt look of a pure dial.

I hated the cyclops on my sub at first and was going to remove it, but it grew on me

I'm a huge fan of the cyclops and for me it is not only very functional, but is something that has always attracted me to the watch. However, since it is your watch and you're the one who needs to be satisfied with the piece I'd say go for it and give it a shot without the cyclops.

The cyclops is just one of the quintessential Rolex features. It is of absolutely no use to me, but I'd never get rid of it. In my mind, it just wouldn't be right.

I'm a "no cyclops" kind of guy, so I gravitate to watches that don't have one (ND sub, SD, Exp1). However, I've never removed one from a watch so I guess it doesn't bother me too much.

Not necessarily. Depending on the age of your watch, removing it may not be an option. Rolex have been using an anti-reflective coating on and under the cyclops for some years now. When I say under I mean on the "inside/underside" of the crystal. If you remove the cyclops you will be left with a "shadow" where it was.
If you can source a non cyclops crystal that will be you're only option.

For me it is a design feature which is part of Rolex, I wouldn't want a Rolex without one unless it was a non date model.

I don't really get this. I don't have to "catch [my watch] at certain angles" to be able to have a clear view. I move my wrist to the point where anything unclear is clear. It's not like you only have a limited opportunity to see the date, which, if missed, means you have to wait for the next shot at it...

Anyway, as others have said, it's part of the Rolex DNA.

I dropped a Jubilee just date one time, and the cyclops popped off when I dropped it on bath tile. AD said they had never seen it happen before. Try that method!

p.s. I personally like the look of a cyclops... very "Rolex" if you will.

So the SD & DSSD don't use a cyclops and methinks Rolex should lose it on the Explorer II , too. If you choose to remove it or replace the crystal, please post pics.

Hey, I said II too.

I assume you have the 40mm expII?

Why not install a new crystal with AR on the cyclops. You will be very satisfied.

That's not altogether true. The first Submariner didn't have a date feature. The Explorer I also doesn't have a date. The SD and DSSD don't have cyclops but do have date features and they're still highly regarded Rolexes.
