5165 vs 5167 choice
Hello all,
I am drawn towards the Aquanaut - but sadly local dealers do not have the 5167 in stock (and the 5165 is discontinued- but can be obtained used of course) If you own either, did you go through the decision proces by trying both on - and did you by any chance take a seperate shot of each watch on your wrist? I guess what is making the decision hard is that I prefer 40 mm watches for sports watches (Typically Rolex sub and 16600 SD) - but for dressier watches and shirt cuffs at work I prefer 38 mm. The Aquanaut would for me be somewhat of a combination between a sports watch but mostly a nicer dressier but still not too formal watch for work wear. Some wrist shots of me wearing 2 other watches - I was hoping it could help you give me some advice: New larger Sub (40 mm but wears slightly too large for me IMO) 16600 Seadweller - also 40 mm but better appearance on the wrist: So what do you think, would the 5167 fill up too much of my wrist - or would the 38 mm 5165 be just that tiny bit too small? Cheers, M |

I think in the end you will need to really try both on and see which one you prefer on your wrist, unfortunately (in a certain way) the Aquanaut's case is unique and therefore you cannot really try to figure out how it wears by comparing with any Rolex.
In all honesty I'm a smaller watches man and can rarely wear something bigger than 40mm. I happen to have a 38mm rose gold chronograph that I think sits perfectly on my wrist and its size makes it look very sporty and dressy. I believe I would porbably go with the 5165 given my tastes but I must add that I've never tried an Aquanaut, therefore I could always be surprised. I wish you a lot of luck with your quest, please keep us updated!

The dial of the 5167 is more interesting.
It radiates from grayish to black (center to edge), while the 5165 is 1 tone black. |

Personally, I like the dial and the flush rubber strap of the 5167, and I think the Sub looks fine on your wrist, so if I were you, I would get the 5167, but I have also tried on both in person, one of the few perks of living in New York City. Good luck, I'm sure you will be happy with either though.

Personally, I think the Aquanaut is more sporty than dressy, although it would also fit nicely under a shirt or suit. In between both, I would say go for the 40mm.

The 5167 wears small for a 40mm because it doesn't have the lugs or crown config of the sub. Wears more like a 38mm so bigger than a 36mm date just and smaller than a 40mm Rolex you pick.

My experience, I originally wanted to get the 38mm 5165, but as it is a discontinued model, they are harder to find than you think. Then a 5167 became available from an AD, and I went with that model. I don't regret it for a second, it's a fabulous watch, and it wears smaller than the Sub, as it is much thinner. Best of luck in whichever you choose.

I'd go for the 5167, but make sure to try it on before you decide.
Good luck! |
