Shouldn't really have done that!

Hello

For a few years now I have been interested in mainly Rolex watches and I now have a collection of 5. I have always been interested in PP watches but I have never seen one I really like. Yesterday I was in London with my wife and we went for a walk around the shops. Usually this is a safe tactic because I see something i like then she tells me why I shouldn't buy what I have seen, I save lots of money this way!

However, I was looking in a shop and I happened to see a PP I liked the look of. It turns out it is a 5170J. I showed my wife the watch and, surprise surprise, she also likes it.

I have to say that I don't know much about PP's and this would be a very large step for me to buy a watch costing this much money. Does anyone have one of these watches and, if so, what can you tell me about it?

I know that PP is a VERY respected manufacturer but, as I have said, this would be a very large leap for me.

Thanks very much.

nice work graham, you're 95% there, first obstacle passed: wife on-board

don't own this sorry but i like the look of it

if you look after your rolexes then there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to wear an expensive patek

after all once on the wrist the value becomes a bit intangible, especially if you look after it

i look after all my watches whether it's my £100 seiko or pateks

let us know when you've pulled the trigger

Wife approved and you didn't buy it there and then? Missed opportunity IMO.

The 5170J is an absolutely outstanding timepiece! I know Evil Bendy and QueueCumber have this model in their collection and Ken, a.k.a. SteelersFan65, has its older brother the 5070P.

What can I say about this watch? Compared to the 5070 it is a tad smaller (39mm instead of 42mm) which is a plus in my humble opinion given my preference for smaller watches (I also happen to prefer the 5170's lugs). It also has an in-house manual winding chronograph movement (as opposed to the Lemania movement in the 5070), in my book both are just stunning no matter who made their movement but it is something you may like to know. Otherwise it is, as you may have already guessed, a yellow gold watch (which is a metal I really like) so it depends on your opinion regarding watches made of such a material.

In the end, you must know if you like it or not and, in order to answer that question, you really must see it on your wrist. This is the only way to know if it's really worth paying that amount for such a watch (I personally believe it is but that's just me...the poor man who will never be able to afford one anyway! ).

I hope it helps!

I did try in on and it looked great.

I'm surprised that I like a yellow gold watch, I have never been attracted to them in the past.

I'm not going to rush in but I have found a way of buying a new watch at about £11000 below UK list price with is VERY tempting.

In case it all goes wrong do PP hold their value very well?

Patek Philippe is one of the brands who hold their value the best, therefore I'd say you're going to be okay if you ever need to sell it.

As for your way of buying it at a good price, as we always say around here, make sure you buy the buyer first and not just the watch at a good price.

EDIT: I must repeat that I'm a yellow gold fan but I'm glad you liked it that much, even if it has a colored case it still looks very sober and under the radar in my opinion.

I didn't really like to ask but do ADs usually discount PPs and, if so, is this a model i could expect some discount on?

Don't hold your breath, I'm still in the 'thinking about it' stage at the moment.

Although I think I can say with certainty that I am now moving into the 'seriously thinking about it' stage.

Unfortunately nobody can give a 100% true answer to that in my opinion. Discounts can be offered on Patek Philippe watches just like other brands but it depends on the relation you have with the AD and the model. Now I really don't know about this very watch but if you get one I'd like to warn you, don't expect to have something like 20% off. I'd like to guess it would be around 5 or 10 if you ever get something but even there I don't want to confirm anything (except for the fact that you shouldn't expect one on a 5167 or a 5711...).

All in all, you may get one but it will depend on a lot of things.

Not a fan of ebay but here is a 5170 @ 25% off. http://www.ebay.com/itm/PATEK-PHILIP...item53eede6bc4
I can't vouch for the seller but I think Ken (steelerfan65) bought his blue 5960p off of him if I'm correct.
You also may want to try and contact one of our trusted seller's. i know Oscar (bodybump) had one for sale in July. http://rolexforums.com/showthread.ph...ighlight=5170j
Hope this helps.

Gagan is a good seller. I have been to his place. Has some of the better prices for patek and has mostly open paper watches as well.

I bought a platinum DD from EliteTime. He sells on the forum and has feedback. I'd call him before going through eBay though. Probably get it cheaper than that.

Thanks for these.

I will be buying from an AD but I like the idea of some discount, just don't know how much to aim for. I know that PPs are rare compared to most brands but I don't know how rare this model is.

Terrible watch. Don't buy it...

I love mine. As mentioned in another thread, if I could only keep one watch it would be the 5170.

I think the Patek move to an in-house movement makes it a highly collectible piece for the future. Nonetheless, I fell in love with it before rationalizing reasons to buy it, and I love using it at work, so even if it never increases in value I am still satisfied. You should be able to find it for 25-30% off retail, but you will have to go non-AD to get that kind of price...
