My Family Rolex Submariner 1968

Hi,

I have got a vintage Rolex Submariner. I do not know the value of it. Some opinion would be appreciated. I will attach a photograph. I used to wear the watch on a daily basis but now it is lying in the cupboard. Had it serviced every three years by a reputable watchmaker. I love it but it is of no further use to me. I farm. There are other things in my life of more importance. I had someone wanting to buy it. He told me me it's worth a $ 800. I don't know but for a watch like this it sounds a bit of an underestimation since I paid $ 300 for every service.

Search the classified ads here at this website and perhaps U.S. eBay and you will see that your watch is worth considerably more than $800 USD! Good luck

I bet he'd be happy to give you 800 bucks for it, you did the right thing to investigate.
Have a look on vintage rolex forum as well, to get an accurate idea. Several thousand, by the way.

Thanks,

will do so. I see you are a man of the sea, too. I own a van der Stadt "dogger" 31' and a 42' Venus Ketch designed by Paul Johnson.

I think I will go to my watchmaker and ask to give me more specs about the watch. I do not have the original certificate and so I do not have the information what watch this exactly is. But I will find out. I do not want to open it myself. I think that is a bad idea since I am not a skilled enough and I luck the tools for it.

Joost, mate, do not sell it for 800USD, actually it is an offence seeling for this price...
Take a look at chrono 24.com for a research on the actual price of this watch. Furthermore, it would be important to check the serial number, it is written between the lugs.

something is not right here, you're a man of the sea and own a boat but don't have any use for a Sub

Plus, I have never heard of anyone, ever, getting a watch serviced every 3 years

You think so. I am an unusual man. I do not need a watch since I can read the sun. I might be 20 minutes out but that is of no importance to a farmer or a man who can use a sextant.
Time is relative and a Rolex is more a jewel than a chronograph.
I am beyond my time of vanity.

Besides that I must confess that one needs to service the things one owns. Cars and Yachts are expensive. A diamond mine (witch I do not own ) is even more expensive. Every thing needs maintenance or sooner or later it will e without value. I do honer that and I do understand that one's man trash is another's man gold.
But there always has to be a fair price in exchange and this is why I just asked here in my inexperience about watches what I am dealing with.
If you would ask me to fix a 2E engine I could give you a valid answer. But I do not now about watches. Need to learn. The screws and tools are to small for my hands.

5513 is the model number, and the 251XXXX etc is the serial of that particular watch.
Dates it to around 1969

Should be a late metres first?? Apparentely, the bezel insert as well as the dial have been replaced sometime along the road...nevertheless, the price for it would be 4 to 6k..
Best regards

Yes, it's a 5513, very collectable.

It looks well polished especially upper right lug, I'd say $4-5,000 depending on the condition of the bracelet.

Just the dial alone could bring 800. It's a $5k watch

Nahh , dial is absolutely correct. First version non serif. The dials changed in 68 low low 2 million serial number.

Original owner watch with a service history ... Great !!

Sure someone will be along in a minute and miss the point entirely to say its crap because its been polished :-)

You need to make a mental note to never do business with the person who offered $800 for your watch. There is a difference from someone who is trying to get a good deal and someone who is trying to steal something from you. That is beyond a low ball offer.

I third that.
I'd keep it and pass it down to someone else in the family who may want it.

On my farm time has its own pace. That is why I don't wear a watch anymore. And cellphone is useless because only a few spots have reception....
But dish delivers internet. So we not cut off totally.
