Have you found your grail?
I ask this having run down a really good 321 Speedy and a meters first Sub in the past couple years thinking each was my end-all be-all and now all I want to do is a) alternate between them til I die or b) get a gilt GMT, a DRSD, a Daytona, etc., etc.
Are you set with what you've got, more or less? How'd you come around to that decision, or if not, why? Pics are great. Mine will come in the morning. |

More or less. I will keep my 5512. It's a great classic sub. Probably flip my 1680 for a red if the deal makes sense. My sub is a very very good piece IMO.

I think the mountain top just keeps getting higher. I just got my 'grail' watch a few months ago, a Patek perp cal chrono but there is still something that nags. I have always wanted a Rolex Comex and so that has become my grail. Ideally it would be a triple six with matte dial but that's just too exp so realistically I have adjusted that to a 16600. I sometimes think I could substitute a double red but I know I'll just want to trade it for a COMEx at the end of the day so I'm saving again. If I get there I'm sure I'll find something else afterwards to call the grail.

Yes. I recently obtained a Patek 5960P. This piece has always been the pinnacle for me and I'm so happy to have it!

I don't know if you can ever attain your grail because IMHO it changes. My grail was an 116619 until I got one. I have several grails at the moment......The Platinum Daytona, Comex 1665, Milsub, 5508.......The list goes on and on.
It will be tough for me to ever be able to top this one.........(Although I am currently working on my next similar acquisition ) Acquiring this: And being able to send it off for service to be transformed to look like this:

Haven't found my grail of all watches, but I did get my grail oyster precision. Good lettering with a matte black dial and good stick markers with a white stripe down the center, it just looks great and I will never sell it, as it was my first, and I can't see it ever losing style. But when I started collecting I wanted a 1680 red, then I really started getting bothered by the date feature do my grail switched to a 5513, but then I saw the 5512 And I really like the cosc text on it, then we all have dreams of owning a PN Daytona, and I still haven't even gotten my feet wet in Patek, so who knows how my tastes will change once I reach that level.

Grails are a moving target :-) And as you dig deeper into history of the mark and you mature it changes imho. the chase is the thing. M

I think the "grail" becomes a collection over time, meaning I can't settle on just one. I finally was able to track down a complete-set 1680 red Sub, to add to my DRSD and 5512, all from the early-mid '70s. So, I have these three Subs now, but I'm not sure I'm done with this crazy hobby. Thank goodness I don't like Daytonas. I'd be bankrupt!

I think its the chase for the money LOL I have no idea what it would cost as no one puts a price on them, seriously.

I'm grateful that I totally have. I understand, and appreciate fully, the joy of the chase, but honestly, there's not another Rolex out there I'm interested in. Never even considered another model. It was just a matter of getting my birth year ('66) and having the "right" look.

I found my grail....but like many others ,one grail leads to another. Unfortunately my next grail is way out of my price range at the moment. So until then I will enjoy my current grail

Not sure I've ever had a 'grail' to set my sights on, really. I'm happy with what I've got for now, but a MilSub would be nice . I don't think I could ever rationalise that sort of outlay though, even though I know I already paid 'irrational' money for these, but 'Mils' are in another league entirely. Maybe one day - there it is... 'grail' status; unreachable

My grail for me is unobtanium short of a barn find or fleamarket (availability and price). Pockets ain't deep enough, priorities, and the bride.

I would love to have a Mil Sub as well but I also can not rationalize spending over $80,000 for a sub. I understand the rarity which is why it has that price but as far as looms go, it's a bit plain. |

Now that choice surprises me, Chris. IDK why, but it does. Not a bad thing, just not what I'd expect.

I have not, nor can I ever find my Grail......since I keep on changing my mind
But I am very content with my collection. Focus on what you have, not what you want.......that's what I keep telling myself.

Once a 'Grail' is attained, can it truly still be considered a Grail?

i remember my first grail was "a vintage Rolex sub"
then it became " a meters first vintage Rolex sub" to be followed by "a meters first vintage Rolex Red Sub" .... you know what i mean right... ? the deeper you dig, the more knowledge you get, more grails appear. Some reachable, some to keep on dreaming. |
