It's crazy to see how cheap the prices were when vintage watches were brand new!
It still shocks me everytime i see an old advertisement or hear story's from the original owners and hear the original price they paid for it. If only we could go back in time and buy the rarest models.....
Just thought I'd share a Ad that was in a old magazine. $490 for the SS model and $3,825 for the 18kt gold model. Wow ...... If there are any original owners of vintage pieces feel free to share pictures and stories. |

Jaws came out in 1975. I'm going to assume this ad is from 1975. A 1680/8 for $3825 in 1975 is $16,630 in 2014. A 1680 for $490 in '75 is $2,130 in 2014. You can easily buy a gold 1680 for $16k today. We all know you cant buy a SS 1680, let alone a Red 1680 for $2k today. So, while the 1680/8 has merely kept up with inflation, the 1680 (and esp the red) has been a pretty great investment.
Is the SS Sub overvalued or is the YG 1680 undervalued? Interesting question. |

The gold version is just limited. It's flashy and more expensive while the SS version is your everyday tool watch so it appeals to so many more people. I just wish my dad or grandfather was into Rolex when they were young. Prices were great. |

So the 5513 and 1680 were the same price? Anyone know when Rolex started charging more for the date model?

Precisely. And it's not like they were $490 and you earned $2k a week...it's all relative.
My father in law bought Australia's 2 oldest produced banknotes in 1969 for $10,000 the pair (only 5 were ever printed). In 2004 after his passing we sent them to auction. One raised $220,000 the other $280,000. It's all relative. A house in 1969 was around $15-$20k. But love the old adverts. |

I know it wasn't cheap back then. I'm just saying it would be nice to be able to buy them at those prices today. Or to inherit the watches because there worth so much more today

TELL ME ABOUT IT!
In 1970 I bought the red 1680 in my avatar new for around $180. Unfortunately, I sold it in the mid 80's for $500. That's not the worst. In 1963 I bought a new 5512 or 5513 (I'm not sure which) with pointed crown guards for around $100 and traded it for an Accutron diving watch in 1969 because the Rolex didn't run as accurately as the Accutron. How many times do you think I've thought about that since becoming interested in vintage Rolex about 10 years ago? |

Here are pics of both:
Wearing the PCG 55?? at 150ft off Panama City, FL; And the 1680 during salvage of a Spanish galleon off Ft Pierce in the 1970's (I didn't get to keep the gold coin either). |

20 years from now we'll remember the good old times when you could by a Rolex under $10k.

Precious metal carried a stiff premium even back in the day...."In steel $428.50. In 18 kt. gold with matching bracelet $3,450"

I bought this (in the photo) for £84 ($140) in 1967 . . . . . but then I could also have bought a very nice, large house in those days for what a new GMT costs now!!

I am buying a vintage gold oyster perpetual soon to dab my feet in gold rolex. Then a president when I graduate. I'm a smaller guy, so lucky me I get to eat up midsizes at great prices. I will eventually get a vintage submariner, but I've already got a stainless steel oyster with a matte black and gold lettering dial, and it's my everyday watch that looks great, the 18kt OP I'm looking to buy is around $2k no bracelet, so it will be around $4k once I source a bracelet which is a steal IMO compared to a submariner even though it's a 34mm solid gold isn't meant to be worn everyday but they're beautiful just to look at, for less money, with more intrinsic value

But remember, if the prices were kept the same I mean 3k for a solid gold etx, it would not be a so cllaed high end watch. It would have been placed in same league of today's mid end watches.
