1675 small hand vs big hand and other questions

Hi all,

I am thinking of extending my collection to include some vintage pieces, and the Pepsi 1675 is the top of my hit list. I'm trying to get up to speed with what to look for since the prices are all over the map and I ultimately want it to be a good piece that will appreciate over the years. I'd really appreciate your help in answering the following:

1. Is the small GMT hand more or less desirable? I think it looks cool and different, but maybe I don't know the whole story...

2. What are the major things you'd look for in a 1675?

Thanks!

Dave

How much are you willing to spend? That will give us an idea since there are so many 1675 variations.

I'd like to put in 5-7k, but if something is super collectible for a little more, I'd go to 9k.

The small 24-hour hand was found on the gilt GMTs (gold-printed dial) from late 1950's to mid-1960s. This small 24-hour hand was also carried over until the supply dried up and can be found on some of the white printed 1675s that replaced the gilt dials around 1967. I've never noticed a premium for a watch just because it had the small 24-hour hand. There are many factors that affect the price, condition and originality being two of them.

$7000 should net you a nice GMT 1675 from the later half of the 1960s through the end of the 1970s. Nice, gilt dialed GMTs are about $9,000 on up.

Thanks! So weird that the small hand doesn't matter, collectors have decided that much smaller details are all of a sudden invaluable. Guess I'll go mostly on condition then and not the GMT hand. Any other things to make sure I look for on a piece?

The main thing is originality. The small hand is a big deal if it has been replaced by a big one. If the watch has always had the big version and matches the dial then that is preferred.

Here's my perfect all-original (except for recently added T38 crystal) II.66 late gilt example.

Indeed a beautiful watch but "all-original"....do you think the hand set is original to your watch?

Eric Ku thought so -- bought it from him. Hands and dial are really mint.

Adam stunning GMT. An easy way to narrow down if hands are matching on a gilt dial is if they glow the same as the dial when charged to a light source.

That's an awesome piece! Are there TRF vintage sellers that don't post their stuff in classifieds and you work with them directly?

I personally like the small GMT hand, as it stands out from its modern counterparts

Entirely different story. Wayyyyy harder to identify as genuine. Would recommend you to only buy those from a trusted dealer.

Mine has a FRH, in combination with a radial/mini dial;

No disrespect towards your opinion and watch, it is a very nice piece...but as others have stated those aren't original hands. Cheers
