Thinking about selling my Speedy Pro for a GMT II - Thoughts?

Hi guys,
I've been lurking for a while but finally decided to post a thread and seek some guidance. I have a modest watch collection that began with the purchase of my Speedy Pro in 2007. It was somewhat of a whim, but it's been my almost daily wearer for 7 years. The fact that it has such a unique history (flight qualified by NASA! It says so on the case back after all ;) ) has been a reliable conversation starter for me (I even talked it up on my first date with my now wife -- if she thought I was a nut she never let on).

The 16710 GMT II has always been a favorite of mine, and now I'm feeling a pull towards it. I like my Speedy but it isn't a perfect daily watch; it's a little clunky, a little uncomfortable, and the hesalite crystal gets scratched way too easily. I've also never worn it to go swimming because part of me never trusted the non screw down crown.

If I got a pre-loved 16710 it would take the place of my Speedy and be an everyday watch. I'd wear it to work, to the golf course, to the beach and everywhere in between.

What are your thoughts on both watches, and on an older GMT II as a daily wearer? How old would be reasonable before I should be careful about wearing it everywhere? Thanks very much.

Wow. I think that you should think twice about selling a watch with that kind of personal history. Since the selling the Speedy would likely only partially fund the GMY anyway, I say wait a little longer and save a little more until you can purchase the GMT outright.

Go for it. Since you are considering a pre-owned GMT you don't have any issues with buying used (I frankly prefer it). If you feel like you are missing your Speedie down the road you can always find another one on the boards. Good luck with your decision.

I know, I've been considering this for a while, and trying to imagine life without my trusted Speedy.

The reason I don't mind buying used is because I honestly prefer the 16710 to the current GMT II iteration. I like the old school look in general; my dream car isn't a new BMW but a mid-80s 3-series. Regarding this watch, how old is too old before it's not wise to wear it as an everyday watch?

I would go for it. GMTs are great! I found myself hesitant to buy a GMT, but I finally pulled the trigger and never looked back. Best of luck.

The GMT II is surely a true classic and a great watch (lurking myself to find a good one, but the market is too hot right now IMO).

Anyhow, if you don't feel particularly attached to your Speedy, then I would say go for it since you would always be able to replace it with a vintage Speedy or a more special model.

On the other hand, having just acquired a Speedy myself to rotate with the 2531.80, I can not say enough how elegant this watch is. I don't think it is clunky (not sure what you meant) and that the GMT II is much more sporty, especially with a Pepsi bezel.

Lastly, as much as I was considering the new BLNR, I must now concede that the 116710 LN is slowly growing on me...

IMO there should be a speedy in every watch collection no matter how small or large it is. Keep the speedy.

I own a GMT II and love it, however I own Seamaster pro as well. 2592.54 I personally like the Omega better, would never sell it. I heard they are hard to find as well...

They are the two favorite watches in my collection. You can't go wrong either way, IMO.

I have GMT master II and Planet ocean 9300, my advise is to get the Planet Ocean GMT Goodplanet. GMT master II though is nice looking as new the polished center link bracelet will get scratches very easy and you will be really annoyed. In addition since Omega use anti-reflective sapphire crystal will really miss the dial clarity if you go to any other watch that doesn't use this technology

Keep the Speedy Pro and figure out a way to also get the GMT.

You will just wind up buying another SP down the line and then wonder why you sold it the first place.

+1. I think you will immediately start missing the Speedmaster and will then have that problem on your hands. I'd look to sell something else to fund the GMT, or just sacrifice a bit more and save enough to buy it outright. We all love that feeling of getting a new watch, wearing it those first few days, but selling your Speedy would be like cheating on your longtime loyal girlfriend for a fling with that hot girl you met at the bar. You'll regret it the next day.

the Speedy is a classic and must be in every collection..a GMT can be had any time, so you may save up for that...you could get a 'meanwhile saving for GMT' sports watch that doesnt break the bank and offers the rugged sportiness you are looking for
