WG Pepsi or 5164a for travel?
If you can have one travel time/ gmt watch which one will you get?
They're about the same price. My issue with 5164a is I live in a tropical country. When I travel to other colder countries, the 5164a becomes loose. Rolex solved this with their easy link bracelet. I love the slealthiness of my 5164a but I also like wearing my watches tight. Don't like it dangling like a bracelet. If I cut one more rubber, it'll be too tight where I live. Thoughts? Suggestions? |

I think you're mind is already set onto the WG Pepsi. It's gorgeous. Go for it.

I find my 5167R to be the most comfortable watch I have ever owned. The tropical strap was only watch I ever could have worn when I went to Arizona in June to the Grand Canyon and Sedona. Any bracelet watch would have driven me crazy! The tropical strap so comfy it is hard to take off!! For me the perfect weekend watch and daily wearer if I didn't own so many other watches. I would pick it all day long over a metal bracelet especially living in a tropical area....No question about it!

Thanks Ken!
I really like my 5164a complication wise, stealthiness, lightness vs the WG pepsi. I guess I have to find the perfect fit of the rubber strap on my wrist without digging in the clasp on my wrist. Might try cutting one more ridge.

I vote for the 5164. But then again, I am a little biased.

It is one watch that wears so comfy a bit loose and when outside in heat wrist expands so perfect fit! I have no problem with it like that given how light and thin the watch is!

Very tough choice, like both watches. If you have other Pateks then I would go for the luxury of a gold bracelet, but if not then the 5164.

Pics of 5164a
Just right in warm Maui, Hawaii.
And second pic doesn't look loose but it's looser in colder New Zealand. |

I don't like PCL's on a sport watch, so Rubber or bracelet without polish links would be my choice. Don't care if it actually have the GMT function at all. I go for Comfort. Actually for traveling I would recommend cheaper options (depends where are you going ) but I would say: 5167A, Sub or AP diver.
Cheers !

5990 w/ 1.5 bracelet link.
And unless you just really love the WG, for travel I'd buy a SS GMTIIc and be done with it. It's strange that the rubber is that different in various climates for you. The picture of your watch looks VERY loose in both shots. Good luck with whatever you decide. All good travel watches, just WG will be very heavy. |

I am biased as well, but just wore my 5164 and it is the most comfortable watch I own, by a large margin. I can not imagine the weight of the white gold GMT being more comfortable as a daily wearer. My 5164 is a lifer for me (unless PP comes up with something even better!)

Hamm! The 5164 travel time complication blows the Rolex GMT complication away. However, the Pepsi GMT is classic and would trust it in water more. Challenge, given the Pepsi GMT is WG the watch will depreciate quickly after the market is saturated. The 5164 has held up pretty well in resale.

I know this is completely off topic, but how many times when you are interacting on a thread you come up with an unrelated idea. All of then sudden you say "it fits" ( just like House DMD). Well in this case, I was able to come up with a conclusion that fits my understanding of a "Real Sport Watch" (of course your definition might vary from mine but I'll still share it here. To me a Real Sport Watch is a watch you feel comfortable Swiming, Snorkling, Fishing, Camping, Hiking etc,
To me the key words there is Feel comfortable. Some of you noticed that I been trying to force a 4th watch, and wonder why I am doing that? I really believe that I cover all angles. But now I Know what it is, I don't own a Real Sport watch from the holy trinity (I can discard VC, because I am not interested in VC). Recently I narrow it down to 5167A and AP diver, but I feel today that the AP diver fits better for my collection, if I ever buy it. I would say this if Ever run in economics problems, and I just can afford one watch, I would sell my 3 watches and buy the 5167R. In my current collection, it doesn't make sense to add another Gold Patek sport watch.

Not to go too off topic, but have you considered the AP Ceramic Diver? That to me seems like a kickass sports watch. My only complaint would be that it can wear quite big depending on wrist size.

The humidity here is insane and can get cold in winter. Between that and AC, the easy-link is almost essential for me. ARolex that hangs loose can become very 'gangsta' very quickly! Out of both options I don't find either particularly 'pretty' watches but my preference would be the WG Pepsi, it's just a damn cool watch. If it was up against the 5167r, that would be a tougher choice

Since I don't travel, the 5164 isn't the watch for me, but as a all purpose watch, the 5167A is as good as it gets. The 5167R is interesting, but on me would look like I am a pimp... which I am not.

I am quite neutral on the 5167 SS and think it's a nice classy sporty PP. I really like the 5167R for how the dial and the RG case pops ( won't mind eventually owning one! ). But I can't warm up to the 5164 traveltime. The problem? Those ears on the right. They look like a pair of jaws.

I'm faced with this exact same conundrum... Sort of. I know, I'll get both eventually but which should come first?

Easy the patek as you can get a discount, even if nominal. I assume the blro will take a year or so to settle down, like most rolex. Why get hit for no reason? Unless patek drops a 5164r on you. The so help you god

PEPSI.
It is the Bar for all travel watches. that said, i have the 5167 and find that the strap is very forgiving if it is a bit loose because it holds tension and its shape with a bit of built in elasticity. i travel with my SS explorer II polar but the aquanaut is a great alternative as it is even more under the radar. im no help :)
