Question on what references to look for

Hi all,

Still learning about Rolexes in general (I have my first incoming - but it's modern). I was looking at getting a couple birth year vintage pieces for myself and my wife. What are the references to look for from 1979 and 1983. They do not need to be a matching set. I would like to stay away from the ladies versions for her (1983) and would prefer to get her something 34mm or bigger. Also she likes white dials. I would also say stainless models for both 1979 and 1983 references.

Certainly could look at White Dialed Explorer II models and be semi matching - Black dial for you, White Dial a/k/as Polar for her. Though I think that may have started in 1984 and not 1983 - tell her to forge her birth certificate and you are all set ;)

Can't go wrong with sub date or no date. If she prefers something more dressy, I second datejust with oyster bracelet.

I would love a Sub for myself or maybe a Daytona. Are the Daytonas of that era (1979) a good piece? For me I would be good with patina or a case that has scratches etc. For her I would say a cleaner better condition case for her and less patina if possible. She has tiny wrists. Would I be able to size an oyster to fit her or would I be better off looking at a head only piece for her and get a strap.

Even though I'm not a fan of Daytona, I would say any SS Daytona is a great watch regardless of age. I've many females friends who wear SS Daytona n they look killer. I think you've just found the perfect combo yourself. One balck one white, what more can u ask for? 👏

Btw, sizing is not a problem.

That's a great question... the Valjoux Daytonas of that era, with their manual wind movements and acrylic crystals, didn't sell well back in the day but are now the focus of the biggest watch cult. You won't find one for less than 5 figures and usually well into that range.

So did some quick searching and the Daytona's are unfortunately out of my reach at this time. So what else from 1983 had a white face for her? I think I'll continue to search for a submariner for me.

Date or Datejust for the wife. Date is 34mm and the Datejust is 36mm. The Date is becoming very popular for the ladies.

Suggestion for you is a 1675. Think 1979 was the last year for it before the 16750. Here's my 1979 (my birthyear too) 1675:

Thanks all for the input. What should I expect to pay for a 1979 sub (date or no date) head only in decent condition? With or without B&P is fine. This will be a keeper. Still looking at what to get the wife.

Reviving my old thread... So from my last post to now, I've been showing the wife pics of various vintage watches and she's not a fan. I showed her the Exp I (new), the Sub (new and vintage), Ranger, Black Bay, and Datejust (new and vintage). I ended up buying her (her choice) a Tudor Ranger and she loves it even though it's not a white dial.

For me I think I've settled in on my next piece either a Rolex or Tudor Sub. I would prefer a no date version. Still learning the vintage stuff, and I think I will get her birth year vs my birth year... So anything specific to look for in a 1983 sub? What crystal came on these? I've seen pics where the crystals are all different shapes and heights. I like the looks of the really domed ones. Is it a no no to replace the original crystal and put that on even if it is an authentic Rolex / Tudor part? How would I get that domed crystal? Could I specify that be put on during a service?
