Your thoughts on this 1680 Red Submariner?

I am considering this 1971 1680 Submariner. What's your piece of advice when looking at it - is it OK?

The only thing I can see is that it is a Mk IV dial - so I need your expert advice. Thanks for taking the time to give your views on this specific watch. :)

Very nice watch overall; fat font insert with kissing 4; dial and hands match; pearl is intact and matching as well.

Bevels have been cleaned up nicely.

The only thing I noticed is that the lower right lug may be over polished compared to the other 3...

Could be a great deal for the right price....

The photo of the watch on the leather strap blew my mind! Looks just like my 5513!!

From your pictures, it looks like a very nice and complete example. I would go for it! I also like that it has the original 9315 folded link bracelet! Many of these were changed out later for the newer 93150 oyster fliplock. Good luck!!

Greetings Bjoern,

That's an exceptionally nice watch. Nice enough that I'd pay a small premium for it (if wanting one).

I see no issues.

Thanks John. Appreciated. I'll verify the lower, right lug. And - yeah - your 5513 image and the first 1680 are striking similar.

Thank you, Joe. My gut feeling is that this is de facto a nice watch and I get that "I-must-have-it-now"-feeling. That is dangerous, so your input along with John and Steve is appreciated to evaluate the watch from an objective viewpoint.

Appreciated, Steve. There is indeed a premium for that watch, but since it appears to be in a good condition - I am in the process of biting.

Appears to be an excellent example of a MKIV to me. Looks unpolished to me also - very honest original example, I'd be happy to own.

Brilliant, thanks. That's 4 endorsements in a row - and that gives me comfort to seal this deal.

comparison

Here is my 1971 with a mark IV dial for comparison purposes. I like your watch, the dial and hands look great. I can't tell if your case has been polished, but the beveled edges on your watch look pretty sharp to me.

In addition, my older watch has a faded bezel, other than that our watches look similar. I say, go for it and don't look back-- That's exactly what I did when I found a nice RedSub...I am so glad I bought my Mark IV...!

Send me a PM if you have any questions...

Good luck,

Great looking sub...I would defiantly go for it, these really clean examples are harder and harder to find.

If it IS unpolished that would explain why the lume is not so yellowed. It was probably used sparingly. Otherwise as mentioned earlier, it looks complete and original to my eyes. Gotta luv it!
Good luck.

Hi Bjoern!
Looks great to me. The lower right lug does look a little thinner but that may just be the photo. But hey, the watch is 43 years old and to find one that ticks every box nowadays seems almost impossible. I personally hope you go for it as I know you'll post the best Red Sub photos that have EVER been produced!
