A walk on the Grey Side
A couple of days I got a call from the Omega boutique I frequent and my man there says he has a Grey Side of the Moon coming in, and that he's going to hold it for me. Normally, I'd dash over the second I hear something cool is coming in but since work had me buried, I told him I'd come in on the weekend. Naturally, the anticipation over the next day and a half built up to the point where I was going to lose my marbles.
Thankfully I survived and finally hit the boutique earlier today. Now, brace yourselves. As much as I've been looking forward to this watch and thought I'd immediately buy it, I wasn't completely sold. I don't know if I built it up too much in my head but it didn't have the same effect that the DSOTM had one me when I first saw it. I suppose this is naturally considering it's basically the same watch with a few cosmetic differences. Don't get me wrong, it is lovely but it didn't have enough to hook me immediately. The couple of quibbles I had - the lighter colour and high polish of the bezel seem to combine and become ultra reflective when light hits it in a certain way. In fact when looking at the bezel in this situation, it's basically illegible. This isn't a gigantic issue because I've never really had a use for the Tachymetre but what really bugged me was the date window. I can't for the life of me figure out why Omega didn't use a disc that was the same colour as the platinum dial. It's a small window but each time I looked down at the watch, my eyes were immediately drawn to that white date window. It's a shame because the texture and look of the platinum dial is something else. Also, considering the strap is a croc finish, on the top anyway, the pin/buckle seemed really out of place - Omega really has to get a ceramic clasp together somehow ;). Place alongside my Dark Side of the Moon, I have to say, I also didn't feel the Grey Side would be as versatile a watch. I can see it working really well with certain formal wear but its perhaps too much of an 'attention getter' when paired with the casual clothes I normally tool around in. Bottom line, I left without buying though the guy is holding it for me until I give him a definite answer. It's a bit of a weird one, this. |

Thanks for sharing your opinion and pics. I guess some watches sing to us and some just don't. I've had watches that I loved in pictures online and in marketing material that left me feeling flat when ai tried them on in person. Also, on the flip side of that I've tried on watches that I hated in pictures and fell in love with them in person. Give it a couple of days to sink in and you'll know for sure. Good luck

My pleasure :). Perhaps I will warm more to the Grey Side - the guy will hold it for me, so I'll visit a couple of times over the next week to see if my opinion changes drastically. I took my Dark Side in to compare but perhaps if I had another watch on me, I would have been swayed easier :).

Thank you for your observations. I really like the Dark Side of the Moon but have been on the fence with the GSOTM. I have not seen it in person but wonder about the color and how it would work day to day. The DSOTM on the other hand would work in most situations. I will see it in person but I am leaning more toward DSOTM.

I almost decided to sell my DSOTM for the GSOTM but I just realize I may prefer it because it's new along with many others. I figured out it would be a 5k upgrade as I would have to pay retail and take loss on the DSOTM. I have now cooled off and I'm glad I didn't do it. The GSOTM is classy and lovely but I feel the DSOTM is more original, unique, and more versatile. A buddy of mine is fortunate to have both. He says he likes the GSOTM a little more when he got it but he admitted that may be because it new. It will be interesting to see people's opinions down the road after they have both been out for awhile. You can't go wrong with either one imho. If I could afford it is probably own both.

It's a nice looking piece, and the novelty factor has many all stirred up with it. Imho, the DSOTM blows it out of the water. It is the coolest all black watch available.

Love the Grey side...
It was love at first sight for me... But I have never seen it under boutique lighting... Just like the Dark side... It doesn't really come alive until it hits natural light... image.jpg

Both are beautiful pieces. Does the bezel on the Dark Side light up as well?

Does the GSoTM wear smaller than the DSoTM due to the lighter color finish?

I'm lucky to have both - interestingly the Dark Side weights a little less but the Grey - to me anyway - looks lighter which is why I weighed them when I brought the Grey home on Saturday. (Pics in an adjacent thread)
I find dark aircraft, for example, always look heavier than the same plane in a lighter scheme. Definately agree with the yin and yang comment. Have mine synced up. |

To me the DSOTM wins over GSOTM, both are great watches but the DSOTM is the true winner in my book...

Practically the same story, one of my ADs gave me a call saying the GSOTM just arrived and that they're holding it for me. I went and tried it on side by side with my DSOTM and it didn't stand out enough to warrant the purchase.
I agree with the versatility comment, the DSOTM perfectly fits my casual dress style but also works remarkably well with my darker color suits. The GSOTM to me only works with formal wear, even if you swap out the strap to something more 'playful'. Just my opinion ... Although the tach/crown lume is a cool touch, for a supposedly more 'formal' watch over the DSOTM I think it was a mistake. All that lume in the dark makes the GSOTM come off as sporty but in a bad way - tacky almost. Time will tell if all that lume finish will hold up well in external environment (outside the crystal). |
