Opinion: 1979 Submariner No Date

Team,

Below are the specs on a Rolex I am going to look at this weekend. The asking price is $3,000.

1979 Stainless Rolex Submariner
Caliber #1560
Case Ref# 5513
Serial # 6,12*,941

**Average Condition
**Scratches in crystal
**Scratches on bracelet
**Will need basic servicing

My main question... is this worth the $3,000 asking price? I'm under the assumption this watch is pretty beat. No box, no papers, and needs servicing.

I have plans to send this to the famed Bob Ridley, which I'm sure will be $1,000 or more.

All in will probably be $4,000 or a little higher. What are you opinions? Resale is an option, but then again, having a vintage sub on the arm, for a daily banger, is pretty damn cool.

Bracelet looks shot. You could put it on a NATO or get it replaced.

You have to decide if you are buying to wear or not.

I am a little bit more of a turnkey type of guy so i personally won't get involved in this. I think with a little bit of patience and for a little bit more money you can get into a vintage sub that will have a better history, be in better condition and overall give you peace of mind.

It it's speaking to you though don't ignore it ;)

Also might be able to get the price down a bit more all things considered.

The dial doesnt appear original nor period correct by looking at these pics. I have never seen such a crown.

Yeah that is a funky looking crown on that dial. Not very good pics though.

Caveat emptor...be very careful with that one OP. These guys that are weighing in on the dial crown know their stuff. If you have any doubts whatsoever on the authenticity of the dial (or any part of the watch) your best option is to walk away and continue your hunt right here with the great group of "trusted sellers"...a deal that is too good to be true generally is just that.
Good luck and please keep us posted.

The coronet seems off and the lume plots are strange. No way.

Best case scenario: repainted dial with water damage, severely overpolished case and trashed bracelet. More likely just a fake, though. Don't even consider it.

$3,000.00? is that a joke?

It's a pass. Every issue raised is real and important.
Don't pursue this watch unless you hate money, then by all means...

I'm far from an expert but I'd agree with all the above posts, that dial looks terrible as well as some major case polishing. I'd pass.

I paid about 3K for a very similar watch from a trusted seller here. Difference is my watch is authentic and in much better condition.

I agree with whats been said about the dail - the crown looks odd, particularly the end-points on the crown...at $3k...pass-o!!

Maybe worth a whirl if you can get picks of the movement and the seller wants to accept 1.5k max....the bracelet is shot and it will need work.

You have been warned and got some great advice from very knowledgeable people. It's a total piece of junk. Say for a second that it was real, it's in awful condition.

The best thing is to do a lot of research to educate yourself. If so you will find what you're looking at is a train wreck.

Another reason to love TRF...the experts on this awesome forum are providing feedback to help the OP from flushing $3,000 down the ole commode!

No other forum out there like TRF!
