Can someone please detail what the Grey Market is? I know what an AD is, but how do they differ?

Also, will/can an AD verify a used rolex is authentic (if so, how much would be a good price to do so, and how long would it take?)

I'm hoping to be in the market for a SS sub and it seems many hundereds of dollars can be saved on the 'bay; but I'm scared.

Finally, why is there a big price break between the date vs. no date sub's?

DB, grey simply can't offer the factory warr. like an AD can for starters. You can pick up a used 16610 from sales boards other than ebay. Sites like TZ and watchnet have many reputable people selling watches. They MUST be able to provide references and proper papers for the watch. Don't be afraid to ask around about a seller here either.

As for the checking, any watchmaker that knows Rolex could do it in a matter of minutes. The charge will vary on the place.

If you are buying from a non AD, just be careful and do your background work, fair and honest deals can be had, but if it seems to good to be true, it probably is.

Just buy from a respected grey dealer. I like the idea of buying from an AD, however, my local AD has disrespected me for the last time.

Try Wingate's or Alan Furman. You can call and speak to Mr. Furman and I feel he is a square guy. I always like it when you can speak directly to the owner of any business.

I own my own business and always take my calls, so to me that is a big deal.
I try to talk to the owner of the local AD, and he is never there, or so they say. He is more than likely in the back counting his money.

As for the warranty, my 16610 LV came with the warranty papers - all blank!
It had the name of the AD, however, Rolex USA would never know this watch had been sold on the grey market.

Thanks all for the kind words... now the big question: New or used.

I have a bad habit of beating the hell out of my stuff, and a nice used SS Sub sounds about right, plus I'm young-ish (29) and I'd like to leave some "upgradeabilty", but then again there is no doubt with a new one.

Also, what year did the most recent dial go into production and what is the source of the glow-in-the-dark bits?

Thoughts?

If you're asking about when the older Tritium dials went out, it was end of 1999. Then in 2000, Rolex began to apply Luminova to the markers and hands.

Would you mind outlining the differences (if any)? I'm assuming both dials function with no sun charge? How bright is it in say, a movie theater?

Tritium has a half life of 12 years. Older Tritium dials would be pretty useless now as far as luminosity is concerned.

As for Luminova, these pictures speak for themselves!!

Is it always that bright or does it need a sun charge?

Is there a known half-life for this model?

LOL! No, it's not always this bright. I had exposed them to a very powerful light source before clicking them. But my YM does glow all night and even throughout the duration of a movie, making visibility pretty clear right through.

Luminova is not known to have a half life. But I think over a very long period of time, the glow will eventually diminish.
