Icon11 First Time Buyer - Pre-Owned Rolex

Hi I am looking to purchase a pre-owned rolex for my husband. The model i am interested in is the two tone domed bezel datejust with roman numerals and a oyster band. Since i am new to buying a rolex i want to make sure i do my research and am looking for advice for a newbie. I am hoping that the members of this great forum can help me with the following:

1. What should i look for when purchasing - e.g. tips on how to tell it is real, how to date the watch, etc.
2. What questions to ask when purchasing - e.g. how many owners, replacement parts, warranty info, factory v. non-factory
3. How do i know i am being offered a fair price?

Thanks for your help in advance!

Your question spans an immense range of issues.

I think you could do well to read a lot of the posts/threads on this forum.

One basic rule is to buy the seller before the watch. This means that the credentials of the seller are paramount. You want a warranty that you can rely upon. If the seller is just a web-site without any address, you may be getting into very dangerous territory.

Sometimes, it pays on a first ever Rolex purchase to buy brand new, you should be able to haggle a discount on the model you are considering to purchase.

Your question is very broad in scope, though your first action, as Steve said, would be to "buy the seller".

I have personally purchased pre-owned from an authorized dealer locally, and might suggest the same. It potentially removes any authenticity concerns you may have, as most AD's typically maintain a very high standard of service and quality in order to be able to sell Rolex in the first place. They may also offer a warranty for the watch (Not factory however)

Check your local AD's, see if they offer pre-owned. Ask lots of questions if you see a watch you are seriously considering (is crystal sapphire or plastic, does the lume glow, etc...) Also, shop....a lot, before you buy. A Rolex is a large outlay of cash, and you should be comfortable with that purchase.

Hope this helps, Happy hunting, and let the boards know when we have a new Rolex WIS in our midst!

My first purchase of pre owned Rolex was from a fellow TRF member which is a pretty good place to start if the right model comes up!
