Tempted to check this one out

When it's too good to be true, but still over $1K, it gets my hackles up...

The magnification looks way too small. I'd meet him at an AD and verify it if you were interested. We've all taken pictures here. If he truly wanted to sell it, why not take a macro shot so you could see the dial......unless he has something to hide. It reeks of a fake in my opinion.

Oh, no doubt, I would have it checked at my AD. And this wouldn't be a keeper, it would be something that I would flip to my TRF friends for a nominal profit... Assuming this thing was legit, would anyone want a $1,700 beater Submariner?

I think so too. Even though the first pic is poor, it still shows second/minute hash marks that are too long...a dead give away for fakes.

I emailed him asking if it was real, and if so, does he have papers/boxes and what is the history of the watch. If he replies, I'll offer to meet him at my AD to have it cracked open.

If (and I doubt it will) it goes that far, I'll have my camera handy and report back!

Some email correspondence occurred in the past 12 hours. I'm starting to smell a rat. Stay tuned!

He's gone dark on me! Sounding more and more like a fake!

This was part of his email to me which I edited (innocent until proven guilty):

" I still have the Rolex for sale, i want you to know that the watch is in perfect working conditions.. Right now i am gone in [REDACTED] at my parents and i hope that`s not going to be a problem because i can still handle the transaction. When i left to [REDACTED], i left the watch along with several other items in the custody of [REDACTED - an eBay business] because i wanted to sell them on eBay when i return, but something came up back home and i decided to sell them before i get back, but not on eBay, because i need to sell them faster.

So if you are still interested let me know because i can make the transaction immediately. Just let me know and i will explain all the details of the transaction...

Thanks,
Richard"

So I wrote back:

"Hi Richard,

I would need to handle the watch personally and have its authenticity verified at my Authorized Dealer. I see no [REDACTED - an eBay business] locations in Minnesota. Is the watch in this state?

Thanks,
David"

And he's gone dark since then...

That's AWESOME!!! Well, unless I can pull his real identity out of hiding, this thread is dead.

Here's what I think of scammers!

The saga continues...

He wrote back!!!

"David,

As i said in my first email i will explain how The Online Outpost works because i want you to be clear on every aspect of this transaction. They are one of the best eBay selling services. You simply drop an item to one of their stores or they pick it up from your home, you find a buyer and they will take care of the rest. When i left to Texas i left 13 items for sale in their custody, they picked them up from my home. I forgot to mention that the shipping is included in the price of sale, they offered me a discount on shipping because i am selling a large number of items and i can afford that.
So basically they have the Rolex insured and ready for shipping. As soon as i will have your shipping details i will send it to them and they will start the transaction. They will email you with an invoice and payment instructions. You will have to send the payment to one of their agents by following the payment instructions. Then you will send the payment details to them, they will validate the transaction and will start the shipping ASAP. If you will have questions you can ask them directly.

So if you agree with this terms and decide to proceed, then i will need your full name and shipping address in order to start the transaction. As soon as i receive this details from you i will forward them to The Online Outpost exactly as you sent them.

Thank you,
Richard Peterson"

I telephoned the Online Outpost, and was told that this was a fraud. I replied to the email saying,

"I contacted the Online Outpost who advised that you are attempting to swindle people. Should this not be the case, tell me which Online Outpost location has the item, and I will contact them to verify."

I wish I could catch this criminal!
