SS Submariner vs. Seadweller

I'm deciding between the SS Submariner Date (black dial) and the Seadweller. I know the Seadwellers cost a bit more - do you think it will be a better investment? (it's a gift - not for me)

Thanks!

I prefer the SS Sub Date because it is a timeless classic. Nothing against the SD except for the fact that it is thicker and too much wrist flop for my tastes.

Very nice of you to make such a gift. I'd say that "investment-wise" it's a wash. Watches in general really aren't investments.

Some think the new SDDS introduction, and end to the current SD, may spark a bump in the resale price. I don't agree, but wanted to share that thought with you.

Personally, I'd rather get the Sub.

Better investment???

Don't count on any watch as an investment and unless the watch is for someone who is a Commercial Diver doing Saturation diving then you will get better utility out of the Submariner. Or you could ask which he prefers.

The SD would be my choice but, you know who your are gifting it to.
Will they appreciate this "tool"?
Sub slightly more subtle.

I heard that they were making changes to the Sub - clasp and/or bezel - this year or next. Is this true - and does the SS M series already have these changes?

Welcome to TRF!

Both the SS Sub Date and SD are excellent watches. Either would be a great gift!

Personally, I prefer the SD for its clean dial look, higher standig crystal and thicker case.

I found some reviews and comparisons for you that might help you decide:

Submariner versus SD.

Sub LV versus SD.

SD versus Omega SMP.

Another SD review.

As stated, it IS a win/win situation, so basically you cannot go wrong with either!

Best of luck!

You heard correctly. Ceramic bezel ala the GMT-IIC and the GMT clasp made even better with a micro-ratchet adjustment. May be two years or more before it reaches the SS model though.

The differences between the two are subtle. You would be better off having your significant other trying them on first.

Appearance wise, the Sub-Date's face looks a tad bigger and has the cyclops over the date where the SD is thicker (which may mean more wrist flop) and doesn't have the cyclops. The SD also has polished sides to the outer links where the Sub-Date does not.

Functionally speaking, they are about the same except for the depth rating associated with each watch which usually doesn't come into play for most people.

Happy hunting and enjoy the watch whichever way you choose.

BTW I got the Sub-Date even though I was planning to get the SD for years. Something made me change my mind when I had both together.

If someone were to give me a Submariner or a Sea Dweller I would be very appreciative with either.

However, I would chose the Sea Dweller only because it is being discontinued

place the sub-date beside the SD , what do you see? a cleaner no nonsense look, a thicker case, thicker crystal, heavier mass, 4times better water resistance, helium valve function, need i say more?

Unless he is a WIS or a diver, the Sub would be the safer and maybe more mainstream purchase. I don't think either watch will be much of an investment.

Sounds good . One for each of you. By your user name, I would think that you're a diver and could use a watch too. You buy him one and he can buy you the other.

If you can buy a new 'M' Sea-Dweller then that would be the one.

I hope the lucky B appreciates it.

Welcome.

IMHO, I would select the SS Sub. I think it is a classic Rolex. However, with either watch, you can't go wrong.

My vote would go to the Sub ND. Best of both worlds. Clean dial and classic look

After owning both, my view is, they are both superb watches, I do find the Sub a little more comfortable than the Dweller, I prefer the heft of the dweller, plus the polished edges to the bracelet and the clean looking dial.

Difficult choice imo but as its a gift, your probably better of with a Sub.

SD is more expensive, and more appealing and it would be more recognizable as a non-common/cheap watch. For the people here who look at the Rolex as experts, mindsets would be different than the mass people who don`t know anything about the history or the "heritage" behind each product line of the Rolex!
If you want him to wear a Rolex and be complimented for it (which would remind him of your favor more often), go for the bolder more professional Sea Dweller; He doesn`t "have to" be a diver or use its ocean depth utmost capacity necessarily!
ND submariner from 5 feet away (where you can`t see the Rolex brand name, or the crown), looks like a casual Tissot or vintage black Seikos. And you definitely don`t want thousands of dollars be seen as only hundreds!
Good Luck and be wise!

Well, since 7 years have elapsed, we've had enough time to see which watch did better from a value perspective. Anyone have the numbers at hand?

Submariner is just such a classic watch and name that you cannot go wrong. I also love the cyclops and the bezel with less markers.
