Problem with an oldie....

My father in laws Rolex OP date purchased by his father at a pharmaceutical convention in Switzerland in 1963. His father wore it for fifty years until he died in 2013. It sat in a drawer for a year and was badly beat up. My father in law said to his knowledge it had NEVER been serviced since his dad bought it, and had run for fifty years, but had now stopped. I let him forget about it for a while, then secretly got the watch and had a full overhaul done in it. Full service, leaving original hands and original dial intact (with just some touch up of the dial.). New crystal, new bracelet. Gave it to him for fathers day 2014. He was speechless and has worn it every day since. Until yesterday. It quit running. With a full wind it will run for about 15 minutes, then just stop. Shaking it will make it start back, but it stops again within 60 seconds. The watch does not hack even when working correctly. I'm taking it to my local Rolex certified watchmaker tomorrow to be checked out. Any thoughts what could cause this?

Can't help as to what the problem could be. Are you taking it to the same person who did the overhaul? Could be under some sort of warranty.

Good luck

Great photo

Whatever it is, I hope it is fixable and if so, it affordable.

Great watch, and I'd have it serviced with someone who specializes in vintage repairs

It is the same guy who did the overhaul. He is a Rolex certified watchmaker, used to work for the RSC New York. Says he feels very comfortably doing it. I feel like he knows his stuff. We'll see.

Great story and I hope you are able to get it sorted out. I would love to wear a Rolex with that kind of history! That is a great thing you did for your father in law!
