Hello guys. Any advice on a perfect start?
I am hoping for good advice to help me choose the better first Rolex between Submariner and Yachtmaster. I like both very much. I like to buy new and keep forever. Later I want to buy a JLC or similar dress watch on leather, so I may not get back to a second Rolex for some time. What's a better start in a collection? Sub or YM?

Personal preference. For me it would be the Sub. Classic and timeless Rolex.

I would buy a Submariner.
You should try on some watches.

Welcome to TRF
Sub is the way to go. Can't go wrong with it. I would advise you to try some watches on as correctly mentioned above. And maybe you could give the GMT II c a try, yes I am a little biased, but it really did the trick for me as a first, versatile Rolex. |

YM is far more versatile IMHO.

Only you can decide which watch you like the most so try them on both and make your decision.

Sub/GMT are the most classic Rolex watches and will be better suited for hard use. That's where I would put my money for a first Rolex. Look for pre ceramic and there could be some good upside for you in the years to come.

It would be a sportier/more casual complement to a dress watch on a strap. |

Either one makes for a great first Rolex. Go Sub if you want classic, go YM if you want something less common.

If you're really wanting to keep it forever, get what sings to you the most. If you think you may flip it one day, go for the Sub.

It's funny you mention this because this was my original "this or that" when my parents offered to buy me my first Rolex. I really knew little about the brand at the time. I just knew I loved the look of the original 5 digit Yachtmaster. I went to an AD in Philadelphia where I was living at the time and ended up walking out with a Submariner Date.
In the long run, I wish I had picked something a little more unusual as my collection has grown since then. I added a ceramic Submariner a few years back and now my original piece feels redundant in my collection. If I picked up that Yachtmaster I would have a little more variety in my collection. I also regret not considering the GMT Master II at the time and passing up the LV Submariner. As a first Rolex I wanted something classic. Had I known more, I might have chosen something different. My advice to you is this: if you think you are going to move on to other brands, or you think one Rolex is enough for you, get the Submariner Date. If you think you want to build a Rolex collection, go with something different. The Submariner will always be around and there is enough variety in the Submariner/dive collection that your tastes might evolve and you might end up loving the Sea Dweller more or perhaps the two tone Submariner Date. I learned that the simple classic (no date) Submariner was my ideal dive watch. I still love my older Submariner Date but it has definitely taken a back seat in my collection and will never be sold for sentimental reasons. It is in semi-retirement, worn sparingly, and will be passed down to a child someday. This is just my experience. Hope it helps. |

Either would be great, try them on as well as one others then decide what sings most to you.
