6 Watch Collection
So I have started to collect watches and my wife says I am addicted. So far I have a black dial datejust w/ stick hour markers ref 116234, a white dial daytona ref 116520 and a Sub-C ref 116610. I want to add a royal oak ref 15202 and a yellow gold daydate. I want to limit my collection to 6 watches and i'm having a hard time figuring out what to add for my last 3 spots.
I'm wondering what you guys would have in your collection if you could only have 6 watches with a total budget of $120,000. |

Sorry, but this is the most ridiculous question ever.
6 watches with a 120k$ budget would provide an infinite amount of possibilities. I hate to call anyone a troll, but I've got to go there on this one.

I'm not trolling at all. Just want to know what you would want in your personal collection.

You have approx. $29k in three watches now and you are planning on spending $90k+ on the next three? Congrats. I would go PM.

I assume you are asking what the sixth choice would be, not the last three, since you have three and know what you want for two of the remaining three.
Here's what I recommend. Since you know what you want for the next two, why not wait until the sixth one hits you in the face? Asking us what we'd buy for a sixth watch with a budget of 120k, is like asking us for our advice as to where you should live. How should we know? For that matter, with 120k to play with, why limit yourself to six? Why not choose more economical options and have ten or twelve? If you are worried about what your significant other thinks, isn't it more about the total cost and not the numbers? Honestly, this is a too open-ended question. |

In my opinion, I would rather have fewer but higher quality pieces. Perhaps look to add a Platona and perhaps a Patek that catches your eye and call it good.

50% of the $120K would go towards one piece. The other $60k would be an assortment of SS GMT/SUB models from various years. But if I had a wad of $120K in the safe, in cash, I wouldn't be looking at watches.

Ok, firstly the OP is not a troll, if I understand correctly he has a budget for $120,000 for 3 more watches. $40k per watch? Sounds amazing, congrats on having such a budget, you're going to pick up some lovely pieces.
Anyway, here's what I would do... I would definitely get a complicated Patek. I think either the 5205r or the 5146j with slate grey dial. You can dress up or down either of these and they both are Annual Calendars which is an extremely useful complication. Next I'd probably buy an Audemars Piguet Royal Oak RG on a dark brown leather strap. Fantastic, sporty, iconic. Great wrist presence. Finally I'd buy a Lange 1 Platinum. In my opinion the absolute pinnacle of watch movements and attention to craft. Incredible. These are obviously just my own personal preferences. Assuming you're buying new and in US dollars this uses up your budget nicely, however the trick is to try to find a dealer stocking all 3 and get the mother of all discounts! Enjoy!

it's not about the money, it's about watches you like and enjoy wearing. I doubt I have $25k in my 6 watches, besides the 5 shot collection I also have a blue SMP, which I've included in a seperate shot.

I have a similliar collection as yours... I would then add a Patek 5712 SS, An AP Royal Oak Chronograph in Rose gold. After that I'd call it a day!

With a similar budget and if picking 6 watches they would be the following:
My Top 4 is easy: 1. WG Sub (Smurf) 2. WG Daytona (Slate Dial) 3. Day Date Platinum 4. BLNR Next two would be a little tougher... 5. Yachtmaster Blue Dial Picking the last one would be the toughest as I like the SubC, Explorer II, and SD4k, might even get a TT DJ or YG GMT IIc or YG SubC for some color. Honestly I would probably get 7 or 8 so I could have one YG piece and two more SS. |

6 is my limit as well (at least for autos). My dream 6 autos and 2 manuals is as follows...
Patek 5711 5513 gilt gloss dial (or milsub if found cheap enough) *1680 (like to upgrade to red) *BLNR *SubC (114060) *IWC Pilots Worldtimer Manual JLC Reverso 1931 tribute *Speedmaster Pro. *=owned |

That is a very healthy budget! I would take my time to find out what I really wanted and liked in a watch/collection.
I'd probably go: - Lange 1 Moonphase in RG (beautiful dressier watch with unique dial layout) - AP 15400 SS, black dial (perfect daily watch if you work in an office) - AP Forged Carbon Diver (such a cool material with a bit of yellow for "pop") - JLC Reverso Duo in SS (my favorite dual time complication on the market) - Rolex Daytona in RG with ceramic bezel (and put it on a Rubber B for a fun weekend watch) - Tudor Fastrider or Blackbay (something to knock around with or take on vacation) And then take the rest of the money to buy something nice and take your wife on a trip for being so patient with this hobby!

Go to your nearest luxury watch store, look at the watches, find 3 you like and go "I want that, that and that..." If you have money left over, great!

My perfect 6 would be something like, speedy, sea dweller, IWC Portuguese, PP 5164A, PP 5170G and a Lange 1. Pick and choose my suggestions from them you lucky man!

Stick with your first 4 and add either a YG DD or YG GMTc and a Patek, maybe RG Nautilus.

I am sorry but this is really not my approach to buy anything. I don't find things to buy becos I have extra money burning a hole in my pocket. I buy something becos I really like it and then I work out the $ to go get it.
If I have 120K sitting around right now, I think I will go buy a Porsche 911 Turbo. Well, different strokes for different folks. |

Don't know why anyone would think the OP is a troll as this is an interesting question and where else can one ask this type of question if not on a watch forum?
For me, with a $120K (keep in mind, I would get less as the CAD dollar is weak now) budget to build a six watch collection I would have following: 1. Day-Date 118238 2. GMT Master II 116718 LN 3. Submariner Date 116618 LB 4. GMT Master II 116710 BLNR 5. Datejust 16234 6. Submariner 114060 It is no surprise to myself that 5 out the 6 I already own. Personally, I am a realist and will purchase watches that I can afford. This collection consists of PM and SS references and gives me a nice balance, regardless if some are the "same" watch as Rolex is the brand for me and I do not see the want or need to move onto other brands. Just something about Rolex that keeps my interest like no other. The above-mentioned six watches would total well over $120K, however, when I factor in the discounts provided by my AD, it will fall in line (approx.) with the $120K budget. |
