Questions from Newbie

After much reading on this forum, and much browsing over the past few years, I have decided to by an Explorer II.

I also found an AD that was willing to be flexible on the list price, but would not do so over the phone.

Being this my first big watch purchase I had a few questions.

How much can I realistically expect to get off the price?

I am going to Aruba next month? Is there any concern about buying from an AD abroad?

Is D series the newest watched?

Any other guidance?

First off, welcome to TRF and your screen name is awesome and one of my favorite all time wrestlers.

D is the newest serial.

As far as abroad, it mostly depends on customs. If you wear the watch and ship the boxes back often you will be fine. The discount also depends on the dealer and the watch. Best of luck in the hunt and please post pics when you land the prize.

Welcome to TRF the Explorer 11 is not as popular as say the Sub.So you should get a discount.You will have to haggle hard over the price,cash always works the best.You should have no problems when buying from a AD anywhere.Just wear your watch back into country,hope you get a good deal anything you get off list is a bonus.

As Daren said, if you buy abroad, you can wear it home and ship the boxes. HOWEVER, I've read more than a few stories of Americans and Canadians who purchase abroad, wear the watch home and ship the boxes, only to be surprised that the emply boxes are accompanied by a note from customs charging the full amount of excise and other taxes on the full retail value of the watch.

Something to consider. As for discounts, don't expect more than say 10-15% off list. And BTW, what dial are you considering?

For you uninitiated and unenlightened doofuses, it's called a bi-directionally rotating bezel. In addition to being useful for viewing multiple time zones, it's very useful for timing things, as in when the parking meter is about to expire, or when it's time to turn over on the beach. Unlike those merely decorative silver colored things with numbers on them that have very limited utility.

It's got a fail-safe mechanism in it. It's a Rolex - immune to failure.

And a BIG welcome to TRF. Yes, the Exp-II is an excellent choice and is a watch with good practical professional features which you will use at some time or the other, specially whilst travelling.

But if we are talking about the ULTIMATE Rolex....then there's only ONE!!!! This one!!!

Black or white....both are fine. I've had the pleasure of owning both at one time and enjoyed them thoroughly. One thing about the Exp-II....it's one of the most comfortable watches out there....lighter than the other Sports models, it sits beautifully on the wrist and time readability with it is very, very easy and instantaneous!!

JJ, you've had the pleasure of owning just about everything at one time or another. You have enjoyed each of them thoroughly until the next great love of your life comes along. You have zero credibility around here when it comes to ULTIMATE or thoroughly enjoyable watches.

I do have feelings you know....that "zero credibility" bit does hurt. I enjoy my watches to the fullest. The problem is I am now flipping more than ever before...don't know why....trying very hard to put all this "nonsense" to an end now that I do have two really nice pieces.

Seriously, that craving has gone and hopefully will stay away....at least the flipping bit has definitely gone. The longing for a THIRD one may come back!! Only time will tell.

Dude, I didn't know you were a wrestling fan When I was a kid the WWF used to come to town at least 4-5 times a year. I used to sit ringside and watch Superfly, The wild Samoans, Tito Santana, The Iron Sheik vs Sgt Slaughter, The Hulkster, the list goes on and on. I even have Bob Backlund's autograph. He was standing in the lobby of the Aud and was late for his match because he wouldn't stop signing until all the kids got one. A real class act.
