Daytona SS or WG - advice?

Hi there,

Want to get a Daytona but with the premiums at the moment it's looking a better bet to buy the WG version. Am in Singapore and prices are approx SGD18 for SS and SGD35 for WG.

I realise that the market for SS is high hence the premium. Any ideas of the prices in US for SS?

Does anybody have any opinion on whether the WG is a good buy or will value drop quickly?

Any advice welcome. Thanks.

I have owned both pieces(Currently, I just own stainless). I sold the WG because I found that I never wore it because I was afraid of damaging it. Also, at 220gm it is a great deal heavier. Current market for a new stainless in the US is 11-12k unless you can wait and get it for the 9200 retail.

I bought my Daytona (WG, black leather strap) because I wanted the meteorite face. I have never regretted that decision, but think the SS Daytona is a helluva reugged, good-looking watch.

I paid about 15K for my watch from a grey dealer here in Houston. Factor in +/- $5K for the meteorite and it really wasn't any more than a SS selling at the current going rate

Best,
Skip

shop around in Singapore, the WG version should be around S$31K and the SS S$17K.

I had a black stainless and sold it to help fund a WG Silver face. I could not read the black face easily.

I read somewhere that the WG alloy needs whitening with rhodium plating every some years or so. Is that true? If it is then it is something to think about...

That is a bad rumour that is totally untrue in every sense.

Rolex white gold has 'NO PLATING'

I have pondered this one as well.
To me, polished SS looks like WG so I tend to go for SS and don't have to worry about it.
I never really got WHY Rolex would put SS next to WG when they look so similar.
It is like having YG outter links with POLISHED BRASS center links on the Day Date....Imagine that!....oh the horror!!

Get a new SS Daytona at MSRP and you have a watch with increased value as you walk out the door. Walk out with a WG Daytona and you lost money if you paid MSRP. I do want a Meteorite one someday though.

In Asia, it is hard to get SS Daytona at MSRP as the AD's themselves sell them at premium prices

Buy what grabs you

I'm fortunate enough to own both. To be honest I still think the WG gold with the black arabic dial is one of the hottest watches on earth.

Both make a statement but in a different way. The SS is conservative and stylish. The WG version raises the bar and temperature

Cases are also different with the WG more elaborate in my view.

One way to get a new SS Daytona without the premium is to have a friend that is a Rolex AD. Most ADs want to make sure you are not going to flip the watch for profit so they like to know who they are dealing with.

I really like the meteorite dial on the WG Daytona.

i love my daytona to bits, i waited long enough for it, the best part was havin the WG face put into the stainless steel watch.

I am due to get another daytona witht he new clasp next month, so i am gettin very excited,

i have waited and will only pay normal retail price

White gold scratches easily. That said, so does stainless. My favorite Rolex in the whole world is the White Gold Daytona with Meteorite dial on a black leather strap - too cool - but I think the SS is the way to go. It is iconic, speaks volumes to other WISs, and, by the way, works pretty well.... (although I just noticed this is a very old thread, so my advice, like the things I tell my wife, will go unheard...)

don't like the daytona's period. so, if i had to choose, i get the stainless steel, likely has better resale value just like the ss sub date. good luck!

i have a 2007 rolex daytona and i honestly think its one of the nicest watches ever made.

However, due to mortgage payments and whatnot, it seems i may have to put mine up on ebay or perhaps on here :(

Might have to downgrade to a submariner or so, which is still a very nice watch.

This is most true. Also, my AD advised if you could pick either SS or WG Daytona, pick the former as the latter will always still be around...
