I bought local from my local AD. I bought the first one, paid full price. They do have great service. They offer to clean my watch every time I go in, bottled water and candy. They polish the watch once a year for the life of the watch for free. Not since they charge $150.00 to polish if you don't buy it from them. In ten years that's $1500.00. and walk into an AD with confidence that I can afford it and that I won't be putting on credit card and pay interest.

Your choice... there are several tiers of pricing and security levels to consider

AD (Authorized Dealer)= Guarantee of authenticity, factory warranty, possible discounted price but generally the most expensive option.

Grey Dealer= Genuine Rolex but, no factory warranty, lower cost than AD (usually)

Used= Low security, fakes abound, deals are around ranging from great to greater than list price.

By security, I mean guarantee that the watch is authentic. Rolex is probably the most copied watch out there. Some of the fakes are quite good. Unless you know what you're looking for, it's would be easy to be fooled. If you buy used, try and use a reputable business (brick & morter and bonded), not eBay or the like. Original box and paperwork are always desireable to get w/a Rolex. The paperwork will confirm the serial number of the watch. Beware, there's fake paperwork out there too.

Short answer, the AD may be the highest cost but offers the highest service, accountability and guarantee of getting a genuine Rolex. At the bottom of the chain, buying used from an unknown... exactly the opposite. Least expensive but the most risky.

buy from a reputable grey market dealer, someone you know and trust for a long time, or someone whom you know well has dealt with for a long time. authenticate the watch before buying..this means take it to an AD to pull the movement and/or check the serial numbers at the 6 o'clock position(requires removing the bracelet). and BTW, your question is important(even though it's been gone over here many times)because it's where most buyers have their first bad experience with high-end watches. IMHO, buying at an AD is where you lose the most money in buying a high-end watch, like buying a brand new car. If this doesn't bother you, and you need the security of buying at an AD, then do that. I just think a good grey market dealer is better, but not for the faint of heart.
best,
dan

I think people here are biased toward AD. I asked a similar question when I joined this forum. I believe part of the reason for this bias is intelectulaization, a defense mechanism explaining the illogical action! what is missing in this forum is a list of reputable sellers. I have had few leads. Im still studying and saving, but when Im ready I will go for a seller other than AD. for new watch, issue of warranty is less of importance. same goes with cleaning and polishing. you can take it to shower and it will be always clean. you can gently brush it and it will shine.... a seller offered me a rolex with all papers and boxes with empty warranty card. that cant be a bad deal, if one can call and verify the serial number and match the make and model with original AD who had the watch. is it possible??
please let us know if u went for a seller and how your transaction turned out.
