Rolex Explorer from 2014
Hi all
My first post here! I'm eying off a used Explorer 214270 from 2014. From my limited understanding - do the 3,6 and 9 indices have lume at all? I understand that the 2016 model does? Should I save some more cash and wait for a good 2016? I can get this 2014 one at a pretty good price. Cheers NL |

Hello,
No 2014 will not. It will be solid white gold 3-6-9 with no lume. Lume will only be on 2016 and newer. However I've been in a dilemma as I've started to think the solid 3-6-9 looks better! |

I do like the idea of the 2016 minute hand reaching the minute track... NL |

Both nice models. The difference is you can still buy one and not the other.
I've got the white gold numerals, just managed to find one before the change. The minute hand is about 2mm longer on the new version and slightly thicker. Both use the same reference number so the parts will be interchangeable going forward. I did get a quote for hands only £60, not sure if it's worth opening it up though as it really is such a small difference I wonder if I'd even tell the difference. |

I also prefer the WG 3 6 & 9 but would rather have the 2016 hands.

I just bought the 3,6,9 lume on 12/18/16 and my AD had both the old and the new side by side in the display case.

Owner of 2016 model here and I love it. Thicker longer hands were as much of an improvement to me as the lume.

You better be getting a screaming discount on a T-Rex, otherwise 2016 without any hesitation.

Chaps
Let's get real here. 99.999999999999999999% of the worlds population will not give a tinkers cuss about the length of the minute hand. It is only WISs suffering from mild OCD that will even notice it. If you are a member of this forum, you are probably in about 0.000000000000000001% of Rolex owners and the others just wear and enjoy the watch and don't obsess about it. The question of a 2014 v 2016 models is down to visual preference. I have a 2014 model and I like the WG 3,6 and 9 numerals but that is just me. Bearing in mind that OCD WISs obsess about rarity, an Explorer with a production run of just six years is going to be fairly sought after in about 20 years from now. Regards Mick |

To this point perhaps a 2015 may be the golden goose. It would have the green medallion or whatever and have been subjected to the ne'er tests but have the older hands and numerals. Interesting thought. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

I recommend you keep shopping for the previous version, the 114270. It's much better proportioned than the new one.

I didn't notice until reading it on here! Lol When you look at some omega models they have shorter hands, it's just part of the style. |

Another mostly meaningless WIS observation from the peanut gallery. The new Basel 2016 Explorer hands are not symmetrical. I don't need the tip of the hand to land on the minute track (it doesn't on the Milgauss either), but I do need the hands to look like they were made for each other.

I just bought one and probably won't wear the 39 mm anymore. The 36 mm is perfect. And never mind others' comments that 36 mm is for ladies: they have it all wrong. |

Yes my thoughts are running in the 36mm direction.
I have a 34mm Tudor Oysterdate with a silver dial that I enjoy wearing on the rare occasions that I wear a suit. I think I'd like 36mm. |

Yeah I don't get the fuss of the short hand. I thought the watch looked fine. It amazes me that Rolex took an approach at redesigning the explorer to a modern style and size. And everyone spat at the minute hand and unlumed 3-6-9. Then they just make it look like a 114270 that at all the pies and everyone loves it now?
I concur that I think rarity will place value on these in 20 years. Just look at the black out 14270's! |

Noticed today my landrover Mph hand doesn't quite reach the marker either.
I'm some relieved my explorer looks the same otherwise I'd be very upset. |

Agreed. But for those of us on the west end of the pond, try to read Mick's posts with a British accent. Much funnier. |

I love my 2014 Explorer. If you can get it at a good price I wouldn't hesitate to pick it up--IMO.

You can always buy longer hands but harder to buy the white gold markers
