PP5396 - any love?

I really like the PP5396R. Very classic dial, modern size and a very useful annual calendar complication. I think all these combined make it a perfect dress watch. However, "watch guys" I talk to generally dont seem to have much love for the piece and all the ADs seem to have a few pieces available all the time. Am I missing something? Why is this refernce (arguably) not as desirable?

5396R is a great watch. Opinion on watches vary considerably, so if you listen to others and what they like, then you can easily miss out on watches that you will enjoy yourself.

The 5396 is a classic Patek dress watch. If you spend most of your time around people who wear sports watches, then the 5396 will get no love. But if you spend time with those who appreciate a fine elegant dress watch, then you will get to appreciate the beauty of the 5396.

I like that reference , is the classic Calatrava dial with an annual calendar complication. If you like the Calatrava line chances are you are gonna love this one.

I suggest you do some more research here and elsewhere. 5396 is indeed very much loved. Amazing watch. Now, the competition is high as there other great ACs in the Patek collection, as well as Lange's.

Seems to be the AC that get the least attention after the 5205s and 5146s but glad the 5396 option is out there. Definitely the option of choice for many.

Like it a lot. Wish it didn't have the 24 hr complication honestly, don't like the way it sits on the center post. Minor quibble.

Agree about the 24 hour indicator on the 5396.

Agree w the 24 hr/complication, totally useless; heard owners before justifying it saying that it makes setting the time easier. But believe me I had a 5205R same issue and is not justified in my eyes, I would rather have a power reserve any day of the week and twice on Sundays.

In the grey its stunning...as for the 24 hour its a pretty useless complication...much like the moon phase to be honest. Its just there...I wouldnt not buy a watch because it has a useless feature ...cheers

Agree and disagree with above statement. I agree with the part that says "I wouldn't not buy a watch because a useless complication" specially on watches that have other things going on for them (like this one or the 5205) that makes the watch still appealing. But I have to disagree with the moonphase complication, this complication bring two things to the table for me , one it looks beautiful (so it has an esthetic benefit) 2nd , I do check my watch to see when are we having a full moon. A full moon is something I look forward to have, even my girlfriend says to me sometimes; hey does your watch says full moon for today. Lol

Cheers

Personally I like the 24 hour feature (AM:PM) but would like it more if it functioned as a second time zone a la GMT.

Slightly off topic but the black dial Tiff version! Soooo good. Maybe it's the lumed leaf hands...if they made the -R, GMT, leaf, numerals and/or minute track? #Sold. Yes, and I'll take a side serving of the blue second hand please and thank you.

Otherwise, so close for me but very well respected IMO.
I don't fancy a power reserve on automatic everyday dress watch.

I personally think 24hr is a great feature when setting the time. Especially if you have to do that somewhat frequently. Less value if you never have the watch away from wrist or winder.

Owned it, lovely watch, particularly in WG with the stark snow dial.

Can the 24hr indicator be set to a second time zone or is it simply an AM/PM dial?

Just to clarify......
I would love a simple Calatrava-style piece with a second time zone, especially in an AC or even a PC. Would knock the Sky Dweller into the long grass.

I've been seriously considering the 5396r-012 as my first Patek. The watch is stunning in person and the Breguet numerals are truly gorgeous.

Yes, a few months ago. Kind of lost the love, though nothing wrong with the watch at all. Concentrating on a couple of chronos on the way

Dear all, many thanks for the suggestions. I went back and forth between the rose and white gold versions of the 5396 over the past few days and ended up going for the white gold version at the very end.

I also ended up getting the same piece It was a major challenge as my initial preference was the rose gold (as I don't have a YG or RG piece)...

It's a great looking watch no doubt - don't worry about what others think and enjoy it. For an annual calendar I went for 5205, but it did not last long in my collection frankly. Many collectors look to perpetual calendars for their calendar complication wristwatches, but annual calendars are quite honestly easier to keep up and more practical.
