No love for the Air King 40mm?

So, I've noticed that the explorer II, Sub, GMT and DJ II are popular on this forum, but it appears that the Air King never gets any mention? Especially the newer 40mm (I personally think it's beautiful). So, why is that? Why isn't the Air King talked about?

I like it as well but there are some that are not crazy about the new dial configuration.

Personally I really like it too. Replaced my Black Milguass with the new Air King. Here in Melbourne Australia had to go on a waiting list for it. Think it would have been better as a 3132 movement in the shock absorbing Explorer case. Illuminated numerals would have been a nice touch. Regardless I love it and it is such a nice subtle Rolex to wear. Had it now for about two months and wear it more than any other of my collection. It's just a nice watch!

It got a mixed reaction when it came out last year: www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=463970

Several people noted that it looked like Rolex was using up old parts, like the Milgauss case and the Explorer 39's discontinued WG numerals.

Seems like it's getting more positive reactions now though.

I think it looks too complicated with all the numbers and personally wouldn't touch it but to each their own

To me, it looks like a crappy Explorer knockoff on steroids. That, and a single lume triangle at 12 is dumb.

It's kind of an odd frankenwatch design, and like the Milgauss, you love it or hate it.

I love it. And love the fact that Rolex was innovative in choosing colors for the seconds and crown. We need more of that

Not my cup of tea. Love the older generations of the AirKing though.

No love for the Air King 40mm?

I like the proportions better than I do that of the older models. However, the dial's too busy for me. I picked up the new Explorer last month, which has similar proportions, but the dial on it suits me much better. To each their own.

I'm not sure how innovative Rolex was, since they were essentially copying themselves vis-à-vis the instruments they contributed to the Bloodhound SSC.

I love the new Air Kings.. They have gone back to the sleeker case style instead of the block cases, paired it up with a no-avionics-interference movement and have a dial that is well suited to the intent of the Air King, flying.

I expect to see a new dial or two for it at Basel this year..

If it isn't now, it will one day be a much sought after collector piece for sure..

(Oh yeah, I can wear it around and nobody calls it by some dumb name!!)

Not really. It's just a brushed Milgauss case, which pre-dates the more masculine/sporty professional-series "block" cases.

I was a hater at first but ended up doing a full 360 and falling for it.
It's a watch you have to try on

Sprite? Or, John Deere?

It is a redialed Milgauss. New dial and hand set and Shazam! a brand new Air King.

I like it in person. Pictures blown up on a monitor over accentuate the numbers. I still prefer the polished case and PCLs of the Milgauss, so I'll stick with that interpretation of this watch, but the new Air King isn't bad.

I like it, except for the 3/6/9. They just don't flow with the rest of the dial IMHO. But I think if you took off the 3/6/9, the watch would look too much like a pilot watch (IWC or whatever). Maybe that would not be a bad thing.

I tried on an Air King and really liked it, but opted for the new Explorer instead. That is what I went in for to begin with, so I may have been biased.

My personal reaction is the face isn't appealing. And, I am a retired amateur pilot and the watch makes absolutely no sense as a pilot's watch. That incongruity would bother me every time I looked at the watch.

It's a very nice watch in person, but I personally can't get over the 3, 6, 9 hour numerals in the midst of the minute numerals.
