Winding question

Being new to Rolex ownership, I had some difficulty changing the date. I pulled out to free the threads, and thinking this was the first position, turned the crown clockwise but nothing happened. I quickly realized that I should've pulled the crown out to the first notch, did so, and changed the date successfully.

My question is: did I do any damage to the timepiece when I wound the crown clockwise before finding the date change first position?

Thanks for your time and expertise!

Sounds like you just manual winded your watch, no worries, I manually wind mine all the time.

No problem, my friend....shouldn't be a problem as long as the date has fallen properly into place.

Thank you JJ and Trevor! I guess I unintentionally hand wound my watch.

When I am looking to hand wind my watch, I suppose that I simply free the crown from the threads and turn clockwise? How do you know when to stop since nothing visible changes? Why would you do so...when you are about to take it off for a while and want to ensure there is enough reserve?

Thanks again, you guys are great!

About 40~45 turns of the crown should be more than enough.

All modern day mechanical watches have a built in "slipping-clutch" mechanism which prevents over-winding of the watch.

So just go for it, buddy!! No worries!!

If your watch sits for a couple for days it will stop, that is the only time I manually wind mine. As JJ said, just give it about 45 turns and go about your day, if you wear it daily, it should keep up the power reserve, as long as you are active. If you put it on and watch TV all day and take a nap, it probably isn't getting wound like when you are walking around the mall. Everybody activity levels are different, so some people have to wind theirs more than others.
