The London "Rolex" Experience

Besides the very cool TRF GTG I wanted to share some Rolex related experiences I encountered in London.

-Rolex RSC, St James's Square: While waiting the purchase and installation of a red/ burgundy bezel insert on my GMT a distinguished older couple came in and the gentleman, wearing a Rolex Sub, inquired about reviewing the new Deep Sea. The woman at the desk told him repeatedly "we have no watches here except our customer's watches for repair." The gentleman stated he talked to some one at RSC who said it was possible and he was not able to find it at any AD. The couple was asked to wait and while the Rolex tech was talking to me the couple where ushered into another office. Not sure if they were successful.

-Watches of Switzerland: With the TRF gang found the salesman funny, informative, and helpful. Kinda rare w/ AD's today. When I was there the day before I asked for a Milgauss, 2 Deep Sea's, and a SS Daytona. He answered: "If you know what you are talking about then you know my reply!"

-While checking the vintage shops in The Burlington Arcade I asked a shop keeper "what are you asking for the '72 Paul Newman w/ box and papers?" He replied "ah yes, I see you know your watches." He then asked "take a guess".
In pounds? I said "somewhere between 75K to 100K." While slowly closing the door in front of me he said "150K!!".

-Harrods: The Watchroom was interesting with many brands represented. The Rolex AD did not utter a word or even acknowledge my existence. A young couple came in and the guy bragged about his Sub purchase from David Duccan [not sure if I have that name right] the 2nd hand dealer. The kid also said DD had a much better selection and he was right, but for a price.

All in all a great trip for any WIS.

Never been to Burlington Arcade before... would really like to visit,... but no. They don't take Amex right?

If I fly to London for a day or so to go to the store, can I sleep on your couch?

That sounds kinda wrong, but I am sure they will not let me sleep in the store.

How about a local motel? What's the address?

My couch is more expensive than the best hotel in London

Gatwick is a 30 min transfer on an express train to London, Heathrow takes 15mins

Always the same in there, the staff at Selfridges are better, but if you go into the Rolex boutique at Harrods wearing anything less than a Leopard Daytona, they look at you like you did something nasty in their store

I popped into the Rolex premises in St James with my son a few months ago - very convivial - had coffee in there we did (well, Hal didn't - he stuck to juice!). I love the carpets!
