Has Barbara Broccoli ID'ed James Bond Rolex as a 6538 Submariner?

Whatever is going on between Daniel Craig and Omega, it looks like that may turn out to be a real treasure chest for those of us who've been working hard to move from speculation to confirmation on the early James Bond Rolex Submariner model(s) worn by Sean Connery.

Supposedly Barbara Broccoli is the source of Daniel Craig's Rolex.

In discussions w/ WatchFinder.co.uk, it seems to me that their sourcing on this is pretty solid ~ if not absolutely bullet-proof. I've Posted a copy of their current ad, which has some pretty neat details, on my Blog.

LINK

A lot of us have been spending a lot of time on this here in various Rolex Forum Threads. So, what do you all think?

I think it reflects more on EON productions commitment to Craig being their franchise character than it does to give us a glimpse of any future on-screen appearances of a Sub..

It also helps to add enthusiasm to the watch they have pictured, and are about to auction off, perhaps for much more if both the old Bond, and the new Bond are known to sport the same model...

If you look closely at the photograph of Daniel Craig that appears with his interview in the new issue of Men's Vogue, you will see he is definitely wearing a Rolex on his wrist.

I can't tell if its a DJ with a fluted bezel or a Sub/GMT with a rotating bezel, but the Rolex emblem on the crown is visible, as are the lug holes in the case. The photo caption describes the clothing Craig is wearing but not the watch. This usually means the clothing is supplied for the photo shoot, but not the watch or other accessories.

I will say...if they selected me to play Bond, I would definitely always wear the Sub whenever out in public.

I would, of course, wear the Omega during the scenes where they have paid for the right to display their watch..

But, unless there is a contract mandating what I wear Omega, like Brosnan had, (or perhaps they all do when appearing as Bond for publicity), then I would want to give the public the sense of continuity with the character they have identified with..

Good if someone could scan and post this pic

I've been an Omega fan ever since Archie Bunker bought a fake one off the docks, I think it was an Onega? Anyway he said the watch could tell if the moon was full. I thought that was pretty neat even if you could just look out the window...

Craig was on the BBC's Friday Night with Jonathan Ross last week. Asked what his interests were when not filming, Craig mentioned holidaying, reading and collecting watches.

I suspect he has a large collection of fine timepieces including many Rolex's.

He no doubt wears as many different watches as takes his fancy, just to keep us all posting.

I work in the motion picture industry. Companies like Omega and Rolex PAY the Producers or the Talent not unlike Nike will do with big sports stars to wear or feature there products in a movie. Whatever Company bellies up the most cash wins the deal. Its really no more than that. The Producers could care less about the brand or model, its all about who pays the Production Company the most money and who promises Ms. Broccoli the prettiest watch has her perk.

GQ Magazine

In the British edition of October's GQ mag, Daniel Craig is wearing a Rolex (not sure which one). It states at the bottom (circled in pic) that the watch is by Rolex and is Craig's own.

I'm sure it is his, given to him by Rolex as long as he wears it in photo shoots and makes them print its name in the article. Its all about product placement and manipulation. You know Rolex gives Daytona's to stars in goodie bags at award events just so they are seen wearing the product? Parez Hilton seen wearing that big clunky Daytona on her wrist? Yup a Freebie.

Well, Asp9mm over at Absolutely James Bond seems to know the full story about the purchase of the Daniel Craig's 6538. From what I gleaned from him, the choice of the 6538 may have been made for other reasons. Nevertheless, he promissed to divulge all in six months. When the story fiirst broke about DC's 6538, I was very excited about the prospect that Broccoli's family identified the exact watch as worn by Cubby/Connery. However Asp9mm seemed to suggest otherwise. I suppose all we can do is wait for the true story to come out. I, for one, am chomping at the bit to find out.

We at TRF are excited to be a part of this breaking excitement that is at the very roots of Sub wearers around the world..

A fitting subject for our pages...

Thanks for bringing us into the James Bond Loop Dell and Rick (DG)..........

Hard for me to weigh in w/ that degree of specificity based on the images I'm seeing (I have the issue here in front of me). Sorta looks like both gold and silver coloring in the metal. Doesn't suggest Sub in my mind.

You could be absolutely right. But it doesn't strike me as in character for Daniel Craig (as a matter-of-fact, the original EMPIRE reference that really nailed it to Sean Connery and the movie Goldfinger seemed way off). Craig is too firm and frequent in his "my Bond stands on its own, my interpretation" angle. If anything, he strikes me as someone more interested in going back to pre-Connery, to Ian Fleming's presentation (which Connery was not, as we've discussed here, from the beginning).

It actually seemed to me that Daniel Craig disclaimed the "collector" label. Wasn't the context along the lines of "what do you do to reward yourself for a job well done?" to which Craig responded that he would buy himself a watch. Jonathan Ross then suggested he was a "collector," and Craig bristled.

By the way: The watch that Daniel Craig donated to the BBC Children in Need charity that night was an Omega De Ville chronoscope, valued at $23,775. LINK

Here's a close-up of that watch which I made, Shieldsy.

And a close-up on the text that I made, which parallels what you circled.

Now tell me: Who among us would confuse this watch w/ a Rolex of any sort? If you were to guess anything, why would you not guess it were, in fact, the same Omega Planet Ocean model as Daniel Craig had worn as James Bond in Casino Royale?

This is what sorta defies credibility to me w/ this story.

I suppose I just took the text as gospel (more fool me). I looked at the watch and thought it could be a sub, but never took the time to blow the pic up and take a closer look like you did.

I'm a bad Rolex enthusiast, I should be banned!!!

No; don't say that.

You raised a good issue, and you got us talking about it. That's important. Plus, you're enthusiastic about James Bond!

There are plenty of places on the Internet where one can go to be subjected to games of "gotcha" a'la self-proclaimed experts who are really only there to twist your content to try and make themselves look smart. I wouldn't want anyone to think Rolex Forums is one of them.

My criticism of this reference in particular was in no way aimed at you. It was, rather (as implied in your Post here), that anyone who was working closely w/ the photograph couldn't possibly have mis-identified the watch as a Rolex. At least not if they knew their watches: And if they didn't, they shoud have asked.

They also had clean images to view, not mechanical separations, as we're left with when reading a magazine.

Okay?

I'm happy to help. After all, it's been a life time pursuit to identify the Connery Rolex. Although Mr. Deaton and I have been at odds in the past. I can certainly respect his passion for Bond watches. Having an adversary or sparring partener often keeps us at the top of our game. Just look at Mr. Bond.
