Why use super hero names Batman/Hulk?
It's just a nick name and doesn't mean anything to anyone outside the watch collecting community. Don't stress too much about it. Sent from my Moto G (4) using Tapatalk

Those dumb names don’t mean anything to a lot of us in the watch collecting community. They’re absurd and I point blank refuse to use them.

I don’t know how nicknames get established but they are truly useful to newbies like me. I have to look up many straight reference numbers but instantly know the difference between a (classic) SS GMT ‘Pepsi’ and the newer WG GMT BLRO, same with BLNR ‘Batman’ and so on. It’s a helpful shorthand and also conveys a playful affection for these amazing machines.

I try to avoid using superhero names when referring to Rolex.

I find the nicknames awesome. It shows how affectionate people are with their prized acquisitions. Humans name all kind of things, even their kitchen appliances (and definitely their cars!), I guess it makes it more personal than just saying BLNR or even some reference that's not always easy to remember.
Why specifically those names stuck is beyond me, but they could have definitely chosen something worse. |

The only thing more absurd then the nicknames of watches is worrying about what they're called, imho. Trying to change public opinion on this is like trying to change the direction of traffic on 5th Avenue in Manhattan. Regarding Pepsi and Coke I suspect these were given prior to comic book characters becoming main stream.

Pepsi and Coke... Sure. Not great, but I can let those slide.
The superhero names are dumb because people are trying to latch onto whatever is popular in culture right now. Not to mention that calling a 40mm watch "hulk" is beyond stupid. Maybe if the DSSD was all green. I definitely cringe a bit every time I see a thread about batman in reference to the BLNR. Modern era comic batman is not even blue. No movie Batman has ever been blue. |

This is all happening because superheroes are popular in mainstream media right now. Even 15 years ago comics were for nerds. I got called out plenty in high school for being that guy.

I'm not a purist ( more of a rebel ), comfortable in using unofficial designations like Hulk and Batman for reference purposes (I've memorized almost all modern Rolex references by heart BUT there is no need to use them unless I'm speaking to a WIS ) and I really don't want to sound like a snob when discussing Rolex watches with family, relatives and friends.
Why the double standards criticizing only nicknames of modern GMT watches when there are other vintage Rolex with even worse jargons with sexist demeanors like Pussy Galore & Sophea Loren GMTs ? |

The pussy galore was named that only because that character of that name wore the watch in the movie.
The Sophia Loren was named that in honor of Sophia's beautiful curvy body. I don't think the intent was to be sexist but more to recognize the beauty of the timepiece as one might recognize the beauty of the female body. (I hope I don't spark a debate with this) One that really gets me is the McQueen Explorer...which McQueen NEVER wore.

BLRO - Bleu Rouge - Pespi color
BLNR - Bleu Noir - due to their dark color profile that embraces similar hues to Gotham’s superhero Root beer - well that just look like root beer color haha they were going to say " GMT Caramel" |

I just curious who start giving those names and it becomes so popular, everyone start calling that! Why people don’t call Sub “007” James Bond. , it was in the movie and it looks like Tuxedo( black and white.

While he was sitting at lunch eating he saw someone wearing the aforementioned watch at a nearby table, and normally he never noticed watches nor had an interest, but on this pleasant day, he was in a good mood. He had recently received a promotion at the nearby Bakery (The Cornish Bakery today) where he made the best apple crossaints which is (and still is) the rumor. He was more talkative and friendly on this day, and struck conversation of a nearby patron. He was intrigued by the colors of the watch worn by his sandwich eating lunchmate, unknowing the 24hr design bezel of the watch, but said it reminded him of the Pepsi Cola colors. The name stuck. The watch in question was actually a 16750. That watch was on display at the Birmingham Rolex Store from 1987-1989. It sold at auction for an undisclosed amount in 1994. Albert Von Horst also went on to name the Coke, though this story is less widely know and details are often speculated. http://www.thecornishbakery.com/about-us/ |

They should call the BLRO the "Pan Am" GMT. Those were Pan Am's colors too, and it was the Pan Am pilots that worked with Rolex to design the BLRO.
