Explorer 114270

I currently have a 216570 Explorer 2 (black) and an 116400 Milgauss (white). I've been thinking about adding a vintage Rolex to the lineup, but came across a 114270 Explorer at a fantastic price. It's from a private individual. He has the original box and papers. Watch is in good shape but it's never been serviced or polished.

I don't consider the 114270 vintage, but is it close to being vintage? I'm not buying it as an investment, but any thoughts on if the value of these models are trending upward or downward? Any issues or concerns with 114270's in general? I'd love to see some pictures and hear your thoughts on this model please.

Thanks so much!

Mike

Buy it. It's an extremely comfortable watch, not flashy at all. I love mine. If you have box and papers over that, it's a very good catch.
Especially since they revamped the Explorer with a much larger version.

I should add that I've owned a 214270 Mk1 and absolutely loved it. The Explorer is probably my favorite model in the lineup. My grail is a 1016 but the prices are crazy. I feel like this is the next best thing.

Any big differences between the 114270 and the 14270? I seem to remember one of them getting a bad rap.

Well if you loved the 214270 you'll kick yourself for not getting a 114270 sooner. You'll realise that it IS the true Explorer; the 39 mm is just a fat clumsy watch compared to the real thing. I know, I own both; the 214270 gets absolutely 0 wrist time.

That's great to hear Nick. I could seriously make a case for owning a 1016, 114270 and a 214270, however I'll wait to see how it goes with the 114270. I hope I feel the same as you. I like the idea of having a little smaller - more classically sized - sports watch to add to the mix.

I agree. I wore an M serial 114270 for a few years, before I replaced it with my current daily....a 16710. I loved that watch. I later bought a 14270 U serial "birth year Rolex" as a HS graduation gift for my son last year, so we now have another one back in the family. It warms my heart to see him wearing it. He's a college freshman now and of course we made him leave it back at home while he's away at school. So, I occasionally wind her up and wear her for a day or two, just to keep the oils flowing...it's the thoughtful thing to do, right!?

Again, it's truly an icon and a classic reference within the Rolex canon.

The 114270 was my first Rolex and I'm as in love with it as I was the day I bought it.

I think to really appreciate the watch, you have to hold it in your hands and wear it for hours on end.

Even with the older bracelet and its smaller size, it's a substantial watch, yet it's extremely comfortable.

The most common comment I've gotten on the Explorer by those whom I've let handle it is how heavy it is.

Honestly, it's no doorstop. It's just a lot heavier than it looks and that takes people by surprise, or maybe they just expect that it will be fake.

I'm wearing it now, even as I type this.
