How to value purchase with aftermarket dial & bezel?

Hi all,

I know some of you will not agree with buying a watch with an aftermarket dial and bezel, but I like the look of this, so am considering. It's a 18039 with an aftermarket dial and bezel. To the best of my knowledge, it's otherwise original. I know that I will not be able to send it to Rolex for service, but I have a jeweler I like and it's a 35-year old watch, so I'm not sure that I care that much. I am, however, trying to decide what I should pay as compared to the going rate for 18039s.

Can you give me an idea of what I should take off of the value for the parts difference, versus an all-factory of the same model without the special bezel and dial? Or is it more or less a wash on something this old?

I would expect the current owner to be PAYING you 2.5k to take it.

does it have the original parts too? if it does perhaps 10-12. if it doesn’t maybe 7.5-10k just a guess though. may. be harder to sell down the road without original parts too. the dial looks a bit off though. not sure if hands are rolex

Original dials and bezels are readily available in the secondary market. A a nice dial and bezel would be in the neighborhood of $1200-$1500.

Well, the $22k the guy on eBay wants for it is waaaay too high. $11k max imho (and even that is being a bit generous). No original box or papers, plus who knows what it looks like inside. We do know the bracelet screws are in bad shape and a bad polish job in general imho.

Just from appearance, I would pass. If the watch was local and at a dealer that would stand behind it, maybe. I think you are asking for issues beyond just the aftermarket dial and bezel.

Oh, it's WAY overpriced ... I wouldn't touch it at 60% of that ... but at 10 or 11 ...

My mama always told me, if you can't say anything nice then don't say anything at all. So here goes.... It would go nicely with your tennis bracelet.

Well that’s the idea. Also looking at a pricier factory 118239 from Sant Blanc with a factory Tahitian MOP diamond dial and fluted bezel. Am more inclined to pony up for that.

My wife wears a modified Rolex and that's fine, it's simply needs to be priced correctly. If you like how it looks modded and The Price is Right feel free to buy it. Enjoy your time!

Unlike a lot of folks here I love the diamonds. And let me soapbox on that for a minute, I have seen a lot of folks on here down on "bling" and PMs (in the DJ and DD line) and talk about how they done like to stand out and be under the radar and blah blah but a lot of these same folks drive Ferraris and Bentley and the like...........so they are not being honest with themselves. With that said and back to your post. The 22K price is way to high. In addition. I would never own a Rolex with non Rolex parts.

Not much else can be added really. I'm also all about factory diamonds and dials. I do appreciate these things but would a lot more of it was the original bezel paved with diamonds. At that price, keep looking.

It is to be valued at the melt value of the gold and whatever the diamonds would bring. They are small, so not much.

< $5k or so...

It might actually be "worth" more if it was serviced and returned to a proper DD

Also as far as resale value goes, aftermarket stuff drops it to zero for some of us because I would not even consider buying it. If this is what you want but cant or wont pay the factory diamond premium, I would start with a good preowned DD all factory, this way you can focus on a getting a good watch at a good price first and the dial and bezel can always be added later. I feel like when buying with a lot of diamonds it kinda muddies the water on the deal you are getting and the condition of the watch itself

Regular 18039 price minus about 2 grand, I'd say

Problem is not so much the fake dial, these are for sale plenty.
Condition of case and bracelet is much more important. This one looks poor, crown on clasp is half gone. Good thing is very little stretch.
No box and papers, realistic value perhaps 7k though i would not buy this one for that price.
Let this one be, going to be a disappointment.

Your plan to pony up for a 6 digit reference is a good idea. I have a 5 digit but prefer the 6 digit for the much better clasp.
Btw the early 6 digits still have the older clasp.
Good luck in your search

In a world with so many replicas, I feel like the only thing you can trust is a 100% genuine piece. Will we start giving some legitimate value to replicas if they include a few legitimate parts? I mean, if it's PARTIALLY real, it must be worth at least $5K right? Watering down a real piece with aftermarket bling feels the exact same to me. When you alter a Rolex, you better be well enough off financially to never need to sell it, because you just dropped the resale value to zero IMHO.

Agreed I think it is at least 1500-2000 less than an OEM dial especially a nice OEM dial like pyramid or white and far less than a desired factory dial like a stella.

Thank you all for your help. I'm going to pass on this piece. For the record, I was considering it at 11/12, not at all at 22K ... ever ... I've done biz with them before so I know how they deal.

I think I'm going to hang on to my 18038 and consider a 118239 w/ factory stuff from Sant Blanc on eBay.
