Icon10 Defending the enemy........

If you had to spend $6-$10K on a watch other than a Rolex and peresent your case as to why it was better than the comparable Rolex, which watch would you choose and why?

I have to say honestly I would not consider any other watch other than a Rolex.

Perhaps I am brainwashed, but leave me alone. I am happy!!!

I would buy a Panerai. Not better or worse. Just different.

The only other watch I would ever consider in that price range would be the Breitling Bentley and not because it's better or even nearly as good as a Rolex. Only that I like the look.

Rolex obviously isn't the only good watch on the market and no one really needs to justify owning more than one brand or even owning and wearing inexpensive watches.

If you are drawn to watches, that's your thing, so there really aren't any "enemies," unless it is the counterfeits and they really don't deserve serious discussion.

However, there aren't many watches out there that in my opinion are worth the kind of money you mention in your opening post.

I might consider spending five thousand on an Omega Speedmaster, but do I really have to justify or defend that decision?

It's a fine, well respected watch, with a history.

There is just one little problem.

It's hard to justify spending five grand on another watch, when I can't seem to get the Explorer off my arm.

Vacheron Constantin Overseas is pretty attractive and a well made watch. It's a tad over 10k, though. I'd probably get another Rollie!

It would either be a Breguet Type XX chronograph, an Omega Planet Ocean chronograph, or maybe the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms. All three look good to me and the brands have a decent watchmaking heritage. The Planet Ocean is available in orange while the Fifty Fathoms intrigues me because it's also available in an all-white finish, not just all-black.

Is it better than a SUB No, not really.
I think it would be a blast to wear in rotation

For around 10K (if I had that much to burn), the Omega Annual Calendar looks really cool. It features the exclusive in-house Omega Automatic Co-Axial calibre 8601. This movement features a Silicon (Si 14) balance-spring as well as a instantaneous jump annual calendar complication. I prefer the steel versions with black alligator strap and steel deployant.

Now, which dial to choose?

I have a Concord Saratoga, a bit small but beautiful. It belongs to my wife now.
I would consider Panerai, VC, Blancpain in that range

I don't see other brands being the "enemy" - unless as otherwise has been mentioned they are fakes. There are many good other makes out there, with as good if not better history then Rolex. It what makes for healthy competition between brands.
For me I would go with either a Breitling, a Panerai an Omega like Chris mentioned earlier to name just a few.

I've got an omega SMP GMT and next plan to get a GP Sea Hawk Pro.

Also love the JLC Memovox tribute to Polaris.

+2 Too many great watches Tony and too little time and more importantly too little money.

As much as I love Rolex watches and their history it is a very short history in terms of time (no pun intended).
Blancpain date back to 1735, Vacheron to 1755 and Patek to 1851 as a company 1839 if you count just Patek even Longines 1832, Omega 1855 and Heuer 1860 to name just a few all have great long histories and have won many many horological prizes.
Other brands are not the enemy, just another conquest waiting to happen
