Icon15 EXPLORER II GMT Orange Hand has 2 versions !!

I own an EXPOLRER II Black Dial with the GMT orange hand in (Black/Orange). Which gives the Phantom effect as advertised by Rolex, and which I really like in this model.
But I have just realized that there is another GMT hand that is completely Orange ( like the one of the White dial ) and which does not give the same Phantom effect as the other one,, owned by one of my friends.
..Any explanation why Rolex makes 2 different hand versions for the same model !? It just makes me uncomfortable !!

Dial change maybe? However, is it an optical illusion, or is there a significant difference in the date magnification?

The full orange hand is from a white dial Exp. The hand with the black base is from the black dial model.

No, my friend got it ( BN ) from the same ROLEX dealer with blank warranty and all the transparent stickers on it.

The difference in date magnification is due to the shooting angle.
Both EXPLORER's are identical.

Because the black dial is advertised by Rolex having a Phantom effect and the GMT Orange hand is half black / half orange. Rolex should strictly stick to the advertised colors!

Yes he got a different watch than the one advertised by Rolex.. The warranty was stamped by his name / purchase date by the Authorized Rolex Dealer.

If he has got it from the grey market I would have said may be the dial was changed from white to black !

Looking at my black dial with the phantom hands I guess your frienf got a Friday afternoon watch. You do realize that perfection isn't really an achievable standard, don't you?

That cyclops looks very under powered on the left. Not sure what to say about the hand, unless it was just an honest mistake from the polar version..

It's possible that the full-orange hand slipped through the process that paints the black half and it was packaged as a half-orange hand.

Remember, Rolex makes close to 3000 watches per day using automated processes. It's not impossible for one or two to slip though as an error.

If sent in for service to an RSC, Rolex will likely notify your friend and insist on correcting it.

The full-orange hand looks odd. I much prefer the correct hand.

My friend got it from authorized Rolex dealer with that has a good reputation.
But I do agree with you that sometimes perfection is not achievable even with Rolex.

Agreed. But do you think is it worth to open the watch for just changing the GMT hand ? I advised my friend to keep it as it is!

Especially not on Friday afternoon? Almost sounds as if you're defending the incorrect hand being used.

Fitting the correct hands is, however, generally not a problem.

Sorry didn't mean to sound like I was defending sloppiness, just that errors seem to be inevitable. Still nice watches though.

Hi,

Wrong magnification and wrong gmt hand.
I would take that watch back in a heartbeat.

Best case scenario, the watch left the factory with these defects and Rolex will be fast to fix them. Either way I would raise these issues with the seller asap.

Worse case scenario, the watch was not a brand new one. A previous owner played around with the dials and hands. It happens often that someone wants to try the other version.

I have a black Ex2 and and I am tempted to buy a polar dial but in my case I would, also, buy the appropriate set of hands, if I decide so.

If it doesn't bother him, keep it as-is. Just let him know that Rolex might want to correct the mistake at the next service.
