Another Platona thread...sorry
My current collection is as follows:
(1) Patek 5980/1r (2) AP 44mm RG ROO (3) AP 40th Anniversary 15202 in SS (4) Rolex Platunum DD2 with ice blue dial (5) Rolex GMT2 YG black dual (6) Rolex WG Sky Dweller in bracelet (7) Rolex Deepsea I have been thinking of getting a Platona for years. The itch has returned and am thinking about flipping the RG AP ROO and the WG SkyD for a Platona. I am slowly getting over the oversized watch trend so this the reason the 44mm ROO is being considered for trade and the WG SkyD is my least worn Rolex plus with the introduction of the SS SkyD, the value of it seems to be diminishing. My only concern is am I giving up too much to get the Platona? Would you do it?

Definitely would.....my only thought differently would be....trading the AP with larger dimensions, yes...but...Your SD Is the only piece with fluted bezel, I’d keep that. I found, from personal experience, the PT DD an PT Daytona were redundant in a collection(for my tastes). The PT Daytona...awesome!! All other bases are covered nicely in your excellent lineup! Just my .02 Good luck!

While I have an appreciation for AP, I find the detailing that makes them a step above Rolex, for some, is their weakness. A friend of mine has a gold bracelet on his AP, and after a year the intricate lines and bevels of the watch are scratched to heck. I have the same 5980-1R as the OP, but am very careful where I wear it. My Platona can go everywhere, without much regard to marking it up. Keep the Patek for a dress watch and go for the Platona.

I much prefer the AP RG ROO but if you are downsizing then the Platona makes more sense.

Yes. You have the ultimate AP in the 15202. I agree with the Skydweller. Better in steel. No need for a ROO. the Platinum Daytona is something special.

I was lucky enough to be speaking to a very nice chap and business acquaintance on Friday there, he was wearing a Platona under his sleeve. He was most impressed when I commented and was able to tell him I knew it was platinum and not just SS. He was not a WIS by any means (he didn't know it had a ceramic bezel) but was pleased that (probably finally) someone knew what it was.
My thoughts? I was underwhelmed if I am to be completely honest. My blue TT Submariner knocked it out the park.. |

Everyone’s entitled to their opinion of course but for me, it’s the most amazing watch ever to grace my wrist. The heft is like nothing I’ve ever felt before. So much so that when I put my SS Sub back on it (briefly) felt like like a cheap toy in comparison. Why own watches that you rarely wear? IMO make the deal happen and wear your frankly amazing collection as much as possible. Best of luck OP. |

My opinion ofcourse, but it looked like used steel Daytona with an attractive dial. I only saw it on his wrist, perhaps if I was able to inspect and try it on a shiny new one my feelings may change. If I was into Daytona I would have one instead of my current though.. so I am biased.

Don't be sorry about starting a Platinum Daytona Thread. They're AWESOME!!!
I can't say that I am a Daytona fanboy, but I have always thought the Platinum Daytona to be the pinnacle of Rolex watches (for me). I have always wanted one since it first came out a Basel. Last year was a very good financial year for me, so my wife blessed the purchase, and I finally got my grail. I splurged and got the diamond baguette dial. I am not usually a fan of diamonds on a man's watch, but it somehow just works on the Platinum Daytona. I have to tell you...........my only regret was that I didn't get it sooner. I absolutely love it. I love it more and more each day. They weight, the way the dial catches the light, the fact that most people don't realize that it is so extravagant.....Only I know. I have exactly ZERO regrets.
Thanks Dr Tom.

I feel this is a bit like if I could take the iron throne, but is it worth the sacrifice?
Platona is debatably the Zenith of the crown, if the opportunity is there I can't think of why I wouldn't take it. |

I am of the same feeling. Just apprehensive when thinking of giving up both the AP and WG SkyD for it. So you wouldn’t second guess it?
