Introduction and first question on Explorer
Hello everybody.
I'm a long time reader and first time writer here on the forum. I would like to get your impression on the following: would you trade a 1994 Submariner date ref 16610 tritium dial that is not in ideal conditions with a brand new Explorer. I have been asked by the shop add 1.9K€ to close the deal as my submariner comes without box nor papers and is with Rolex service case ( serial 444XXXX), service bezel and service second hand. What would you do? thanks for the answers. |

I don't think I would do it but to be sure I would like to see the condition of your Submariner.
Do you have some pictures of your Submariner?

Hard to say without seeing the watch.
If I had to guess- they'll probably break about even watch for watch, and that 1.9k will mostly be profit/pocketed. How much do you want to get rid of that sub? How much do you want that explorer? If you really want that explorer... I'd try to get them down to +1k€ |

If it is within your means I would keep it and buy the explorer! I have been loving my X1 I picked up a few weeks ago!

I would say it is a decent trade-in offer, if the Explorer is the watch you would prefer. I don't believe that you are improving your overall watch "collection" or making any type of potential profit from the deal. When was the last time your Sub was serviced. Since service on a Sub is around $1000usd these days, I would consider that in the trade.

Your sub is in much better condition than you give yourself credit for. 1,900 extra to trade it for an explorer seems like too much to me.

Unfortunately, even if I serviced the watch a couple of months ago by my ( non Rolex) trusted watch repair shop the issues are that I do not have anymore the box and papers, the case is rolex service supply and not the initial one and glass, second hand and bezel has been changed ( glass with third party spare)...

At 1.9K difference I would not do that trade.
The lack of box and paper's requested / noted by the shop is ridiculous. Given its an early 90's watch and frankly pre-2000s watch almost 99% of the time there would not be any of these items. Sames goes for 100% original pieces. The fact the shop suggested no box and papers would mean they are valuing the item less than what market would be. Frankly its the opposite; the market expectation is no box and papers. If those items are provide, it is worth more than typical market conditions. Pass on the deal bud. |

Absolutely not, you could sell the sub and buy the explorer outright. Yes I would take the Explorer over the Sub, but theres no way I'm adding money instead of just selling it to buy the other watch.

If you want a new Rolex do it But your getting low balled on your trade, shop around more or sell yours outright.

For me, it would be a definite "no" since I like your Sub more than the Explorer. Having to put money on top of the deal too makes it additionally less appealing. That's just my 2 cents.
OTOH, if the Explorer is a watch that you really like and have been really wanting, I'd say go for it. I'm on board with others though and if you can do it, try to buy the new watch and keep the Sub too. If you must sell, I would sell the Sub outright to maximize the return. Good luck on whatever you decide to do. |
