Proper way to change date on submariner?

Hi all,

I recently picked up my first Rolex and opted for the Hulk. Ref 116610LV with the 3135 movement. I love it to pieces and wear it daily.

When I purchased the watch, the AD showed me the "correct way" to change the date. The AD said the hour and minute hand has to be pointed towards 6 o'clock before turning the crown to adjust the date. It just sounded like confusing advice that contradicts Rolex's robustness. I couldn't find anything online to substantiate this advice either.

Is this the proper way to adjust the date? Thanks and I'd like to hear other owners' thoughts...

Pull the winding crown out to the first notch twist the winding crown counter-clockwise (for a men’s watch) or clockwise (for a women’s watch) to adjust the date. And today many ADs talk though where the sun don't shine,no need for hour and minute hand has to be pointed towards 6 o'clock.Just make sure you set the date to change for 12 midnight and not 12 midday.

Nope, shouldn't matter on a modern Rolex.

Yes all jokes aside, Padi56 said it best. ADs talk though where the sun don't shine...

It’s not a valjoux movement. Change your date as you fit.

Indeed. I always do it at 630 on my watches out of habit but not needed on this Rolex.

Your AD was incorrect.

You can set the date on your Sub Date whenever you want - no restriction as there is on other manufacturers.

Thanks for the helpful advice! And yes I did search the web and also read the owners’ manual carefully and I didn’t see any mention of that.

BTw, does the advice given to me apply to any current Rolex model?

Shouldn’t matter about hour hand but I bust a JLC Moonphase Watch by doing a date change with the hour around 11!

Spoiled by modern rolexes I was...

Never seen JLC in the same light since. Although, still like my MUT moonphase

Many other brands you should not set the date directly between maybe 9pm-2am, but you can wind the minute hand forward to advance the date with no issues.

This is not an issue with Rolex.
