Oyster Perpetual vs. Datejust

Hi folks,

I've been racking my brain (Bordering on obsessive) and have come to the conclusion that I want... no, I NEED to pull the trigger on one of the following: New Oyster Perpetual Black Dial OR Datejust - both in 36mm and configured exactly as the images below. As I'm getting older I appreciate a smaller watch on the wrist.

Here's the tricky part, something from my collection needs to go to make room (See my 4 current watches in the signature below). Adding a 5th is NOT an option, so you're not allowed to make that suggestion

Which would you add, and which would you kick to the curb to make room??

Thanks for your insight!

I'd go with the OP if you already have a DJ.

Boy that's a tough choice to let the speedy go. You have one nice looking Datejust but there's always room for two. I'd go for another.

I would get rid of the DJ, and get the OP. I don't like the cyclops generally, and like the balance of that collection more - always feel I need a chrono- but hey that's me and my opinion; go with your instinct.

I think you'd be crazy to part with any of those watches.

Save up and buy the OP.

I do love that little blue gem with the 3-6-9 dial. Pictures welcome!

3 of the 4 watches I own have a date function so I'm not fussed about having to have it on the next piece.

Or the angel on your right, depending on your view.

You either loose the vintage DJ and add a modern one or you loose the speedy and add an OP.
I love that jlc and I bet you love the batman, speedy easiest to go/replace.
Inside your rules I'd loose the speedy, love the OP,

How does your 1601 play into this? Does it serve the purpose of having a reasonably sized Rolex with sporty elegance (which is what appeals about the new DJ and OP, I presume)?

I guess if you want one of those two new Rolex watches, then my vote is move the BLNR and the 1601, buy the new 36mm DJ, and spend the balance on a classic BMW motorcycle for tooling around the Ontario countryside.

I would move the 1601 for the new DJ36. Pass on the OP if it is a 34/36 version (personal preference on that... I don't mind the smaller version DJ).

I won't move the Speedy for a couple reasons: 1. Value of the Speedy 2. Uniqueness within your collection. I think either the OP of DJ will clash with the 1601.

100% this. Dumping the Speedy as suggested is just wrong IMO

I would get the Just date 36. I think the single ticks at the 3, 6, and 9 positions are more elegant. The OP with the double ticks at the 3, 6, and 9 positions do not do it for me.

Date vs no date
Price difference and size variation in the DJ
For those reasons I would go DJ

I was looking at the same 2 watches and I bought the date just in black. It is freakin Awesome. The roulette date is great. Every other day alternates black and red. Very hard to beat this watch. 36 mm is very doable and comfortable.

I would keep the models you have.

I would not choose either of those.

I prefer the all brushed look and lack of date over a modern DateJust.

At the moment you have two black dials and two light dials. If you bring in another black one at the expense of one of the white ones you perhaps have fewer flexible options and if you thought along those lines I would give up the speedy before I gave up the BLNR.

Still, I don't think you need to think along those lines and I would dump the old DJ if I bought a new one. I can see from your instagram you like to change up your straps to give different looks, but as long as you keep your JLC I think you have the 'classy light dial' covered, and if you're restricting your collection size I don't think you need an old DJ 1601 if you already have something with a date, something with a steel bracelet, something with a lighter dial etc etc.

I love my speedies but I really miss having the date when I wear them.

Buy the DJ. There are 4 in my collection and I haven’t bought a no date Rolex yet.

OP 116000 Blue 3-6-9 Arabic Dial

Bought my OP 36 in 2011 around the time the Explorer 39 was first released.
I'd already given my 14270 & 114270 to my daughters - I wasn't keen on the size, the metal 3-6-9 indices and (to me at least) the not very well proportioned hands on the 214270 so I looked at the OP which was re-hashed around the same time.
Liked it straight away and bought it, but maybe because I missed my Explorers and definitely because the initial 116000s had much thinner hands (making it harder to read in certain light) - I changed the hands for a 16610 set (keeping the originals) and voila... my daily wearer (LV 50th weekends/hols), which IMHO wears 'bigger' than both of my Explorers did.
The current versions (Black & White dials 2018) are also neat (Son -in- laws own 1 of each, a nephew has the Steel dial).
As kinyik observed earlier "The OP has an understated class to it" - It's also an excellent watch that does exactly what it says on the tin....

Lume shot to follow.............
