Milgauss love

I am a huge fan of the modern Milgauss. It is my second favorite model (after the Explorer II) and my twin brother's favorite model. So needless to say we love the Milgauss. My understanding is that the original Milgauss ran from 1956 to 1988 and the current six digit model ran from 2007 to present.

I thought it would be fun to get some specific dates on the history of the modern six digit Milgauss, discuss our love of the model and share some pictures. I know the Milgauss was re-introduced at Basel World 2007 and it came in black, white and black GV forms. Does anyone know the specific dates on when the black and white models were discontinued? When did the mk1 white Milgauss change over to the mk2? That is, when did the lume change from green/blue to all blue?

I also understand that the original MSRP was $6,200 (USD) for the clear crystal and $6,575 for the GV version. When did the price change to the current $7,650 for the clear crystal and $8,200 for the GV variants?

Thanks for your feedback!

Hey Wadup Chloebear.. l bought a random ser. no. black non gv with a nov. 2015 warranty card but I remember checking at that time then and that version was discontinued in 2013. I think the white ended in 2016. I have a Zblue now.

The 2011-2012 Rolex catalogue has the black Milgauss with clear crystal. Does anyone happen to know if the 2012-2013 catalogue still has the black with clear crystal!?

I'm pretty certain 2012 was the last year for black, although they could be found in AD's beyond that.

Oh that's interesting. Does it have the extra internal shielding/Faraday cage inside too?

As for me. the Milgauss is growing on me - especially the green glass variants. I was initially drawn to the black dial one because I think the colours have better contrast, but having seen it in the light of day at an AD today, the dial is sort of flattish looking and not very inspiring to be honest, compared to the electric blue which has the radiating sunbeam effect...

The Z-Blue is a beauty. Just the right size, well proportioned and striking to look at.

Love my black dial GV. Wasn't planning to buy one, ever. Nope. Not the slightest interest. Where's the cyclops, where are the additional complications? And, a fully polished case?... OMG, what a scratch magnet. PCLs on a bracelet? I hate, hate, hate PCLs.

Went to a AD a few months ago to see if rumors were true about SS availability (they were), but they happened to have a black Milgauss on display. The matte dial, the green crystal, the orange and white indices, and that rebellious orange lightning bolt seconds hand... I was smitten.

I left the AD empty handed, but went home and started rationalizing. You know...

- I work around computer equipment a lot.
- Hey, it's almost Halloween, and the orange and black are perfect for greeting trick-or-treaters.
- Green and orange are great autumn colors for the two weeks out of the year in Maine you can enjoy the foliage before you have to rake. And rake.
- PCLs? PCLs can always be 'fixed'.
- If an EM pulse takes out the east coast, I'll still know what time it is.
- I should start working out again to handle the Milgauss heft with dignity.

A week later I picked one up on DavidSW, and bought a RubberB strap to rid myself of the hideous PCLs. I am content for now.

Yes the Air-King has the same case workings and Faraday cage as the Milgauss...it is the same watch apart from the dial hands and non shiny center links...it's also £1500 cheaper...it's a relative bargain

Your daughter is a spitting image of Jordana Brewster meets Danika Patrick. Shes stunning! Great watch too, I own a Z blue myself.

The black dial Milgauss is a very cool shade of matte black, which is very different from and lighter black than Rolex black dial Subs, GMTs, Explorers, etc.

Great looking watches and just different enough too. I spoke to a friend of mine that has done the "special Rolex tour" and they spoke of how the green crystals are grown in the labs there at Rolex and the time it takes to make just one. Pretty cool. If you can find out more it would make the watch that much more special to you.

I have no idea how and why the Milgauss is such a controversial watch to many. I know it has a following and many people love it, but I read so many posts on the forum where people dislike it.

For me, years ago before I used to own any Rolexes, I used to look at the grey face version in shop windows and thinkk to myself, if only it had a date. That thought of mine has now pretty much been answered in the DJ41 in terms of similar size, which I now own.

I still love the grey and blue dial versions.

I'm torn on this; while the contrast with the green and orange with the matte black is striking, I find the dial material to be too 'flat' black in colour - it's almost like black craft cardboard in texture. I feel they could have made it look just a little more tasty.

..but then the blue dial - the colour contrast doesn't pop as much and it doesn't have the orange lume on the 3 6 and 9.

Very interesting. I am not sure if I knew that they were the same watch. Anyone have any ideas on why Rolex didn't keep it all under one line? If they are basically the same watch, why split them between the milgauss of this and Air King lines?
