AD asking above MSRP AND 50% non-refund down for a SS sub?! I have now seen it all..

Hello TRF. I have been a lurker of the forum for a couple months now, and have grown quite fond of the no-date sub ref 114060.

--rant alert
Few days ago I decided to call my local ADs in Vancouver BC to try one on. Turns out none of them have anything left other than the datejusts. To my surprise, one of them even marked up $1000 on top of the MSRP $8550, to $9550 plus 12% tax, and wanted me to put down 50% of that $9550 as deposite, on a non-refundable, non-negotiable, no expectance delivery date clause. WHAT??!!

This screams shady business practice to me, as I have never seen such clause EVER, not even in our crazy housing market, let alone from an watch AD

Is this a new rolex thing nowadays?

An AD in Greece told me it would cost an additional €1,000 for a SS sub date. He said he had it in his safe. I didn’t bother to look at it, I just walked out.

Crazy! I waited 3 months and was able to get the 114060 this summer at my AD nothing up front and at MSRP. They are not just siting around but they are one of the models that do seam to be getable in a reasonable time.

By the way congrats on your first post.

Deposits are common but usually not non-refundable. Stock is "limited." If you pucker up the $$$ (in terms of paying a deposit) I'm sure they'll find one for you within the month or so... basically as soon as their next shipment arrives.

I know a couple ADs in Vancouver will take waitlists without deposits.

Which AD is asking over MSRP and that insane amount may I ask?

Wow! The AD can make you wait indefinitely for your partially prepaid Sub with no refund. That's a new high of craziness with some Rolex ADs. Or maybe they're trying to tell you to go away.

It's not Rolex thing, it's freaking AD thing
Please, report this AD to Rolex

I haven't purchased since Dec... But even then it was a DaytonaC no money down and in 3 months... Crazy to see how things are moving towards now. I doubt my AD would ever pull that... Seems very shady. Time to look elsewhere at another AD if you have patience. If you need one right away then the trusted sellers here can help you out.

Go watch shopping with your lawyer, let's see if they say it's "non-refundable" anymore.

I thought only the boutique downtown takes wait list without deposits.

I bought my no-date sub ref 114060 in March, my Sub was untouched no wait time and it was still in it's coffin when I bought it...it's a beauty. I got it with a small discount too, just as this SS craziness started. The local AD now tells me their waitlist is 6 months. My local AD is very good, service top notch. I will buy another Rolex soon from them but no way would I pay a $1000 marked up non refundable deposit. Good Luck on your hunt out there!

Don’t think mark up is allowed in Canada.

I was just at one of the Vancouver ADs last week and saw a "we haven't received any for weeks" DaytonaC magically appeared after one guy decided to buy a Lange 1 Time Zone.

I was thinking that, as well. It raises an interesting legal question: at what point does a "non-refundable deposit" become a theft if they fail to deliver the promised watch? I hope the OP walked out.

How?
Montecristo down in West Hastings dont hold Rolex. Their other shop is in Oakridge (20 min away) which holds their Rolex license, so how were they able to pull out a Daytona in the West Hastings shop?

Yeah, that is very poor indeed. Seem to be a lot of us Vancouverites on this forum! I would love to know the AD. If you don't want to name them, please send me a PM. I think I will be getting a Rolex as my next watch, and I am pretty sure where I will get it. But I know a couple of other guys, not on the forum, who are looking at getting a Rolex, and I would like to warn them. Sorry to hear of your bad luck there.
Cheers,
Carl

I’ll stay away from them.

Too many side deals / backdoor deals going on.

i would absolutely not buy from them. This is not a hard watch to find at close to retail from a grey dealer. Just buy it there or find a different AD and wait.

Um...what do you mean??? Perhaps this occurred at the Oakridge location since they usually have all their Lange & Sohne's there + the Rolex section. And regardless, they send watches back and forth between stores every day...

I got mine with a nice discount a couple of months ago. You have to be .... to pay a non refundable deposit.

I wonder if this AD knows they're losing their dealership. Lots of ADs have been shut down recently. Seems like a good thing to try to do if you know it's coming for you too -- even if you lose the brand you could still source one BNIN for less than that for the customer.

Very unusual and unfair customer service form your dealer. Just for a month ago my dealer was providing 5% discount on sub and DS though removed from October. Waiting time was 2-3 weeks until next shipment for those 2 references.

I think that was the AD's way of saying "Go Away". Albeit an ugly way to do so but I doubt they think anyone would actually take them up on that deal.

Please do not fall for any marketing hype or succumb to AD pressure tactics.

There are plenty of members here with “incomings” of SS sport models - including the Submariner. Call around. Be persistent, be patient, and give your business to an AD who avoids shady sales tactics.

I'm not sure the deposit thing is client specific or model specific, but both the boutique and one other AD I have dealt with doesn't require a deposit on something like a Sub.
