I watched it earlier this morning. Awesome story and good thing he didn’t send it in to Rolex for servicing.

Glad he escaped disaster by not sending it to an RSC. Imagine how many vintage watches have been lost to service.

Wonder how much it is worth now that the vintage market has tanked.

I saw this video yesterday.

I wish I had an uncle like that

Its such a pity Rolex no longer supplies Tiffany.

I would get the hands restored with lume.

No worries...

There’s no Tritium left in that watch after all these years.

Tritium decays into helium-3 within 25 years - some beta particles would be emitted over that time but no Tritium.

What would be floating around is the powdered phosphorous that was in the paint with titanium particles. Just as bad for causing a mess with any oil that may not have evaporated by now.

Wonder who serviced it? Seconds hand movement is a little wonky.

What a beautiful piece of history. I love these stories because it strengthens my love for Rolex history. That is a watch that was worn and used as it should be in a time when no one hoarded things and it has survived through countless events in history and events in his personal life and there it is still beating.
The value is priceless.

Thank you for posting.

"tritium" = Everything you just said. However, over-explaining the technicalities wasn't necessary.

Should I have simply said "lume" to appease the peanut gallery? Maybe, but I didn't.

I said "tritium bits" implying physical pieces broken out of the hands. "Bits" are not a unit of measure of tritium but instead implies what anyone colloquially calls "paint", "lume", or even "tritium". If we were in a scientific discussion about chemical illumination and particle half-life then it might actually matter. This is not that.

And, now the fun of the discussion has been sucked out in a vacuum.
