Icon20 16710 with 3186 cost

Do not ask me why, but I have a STRONG itch for a 16710 with a 3186 movement. I like the idea of having the classic gmt with the newer movement. I’m not too fascinated with the “stick dial” bla bla bla stuff I just feel like this is the 16710 to own perhaps.

Now, what can I expect to pay for one realistically. I know the gmt in general is going crazy with premiums, old and new. Do you think I should wait for the dust to settle? I just see less and less 16710 with the 3186 movement getting posted in complete sets.

Any opinions and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I doubt you'll find one for less than $18,000 US. Rare as hen's teeth, and highly sought after. There will never be a flood of them on the market because there just aren't many of them in existence.

The 3186 movement had issues. Rolex will replace parts that fail, but the new movement was not an real upgrade over the bulletproof 3185.

I've only seen the 3186 with the stick dial. Never saw just the 3186 movement with a serif dial.

I don't understand this 16710 with 3186 bs. And the marking up the price for essentially the same watch is even bigger bs.

You won't find a good one for less than 20K. Good luck in your search and post pics if you get one!

I have a 3186 with the rectangular dial. Cheers!

I have mine red blue.
Anyone think $20k+ will always hold?

Might be a good time to sell?

I seen them go from $10k to 20k in the last 5 years or so and sometimes contemplate selling and cashing out and just getting a good complete 3185 movement one and downgrading and collecting about 10k in the process

I don't get the premium for a movement you cannot or will never see. It's not like it's faster or has more power or is better looking..

It’s not like any of them are really finished movements like a Patek

That’s a big premium for what amounts to what? 3 different parts in the 86 vs. 85? Naw.

Really annoys me. D, Z, M series were about 50+% stick dial or box dial as far as i can make out. Dealers are whacking another 3k USD on for it. They aren’t ‘rare’.

If you really want a cheaper 16710/3186 , the best option would be without box and papers, you can knock off 25%+ of the price.

I always think it is better to have a good watch rather than poor watch with B&P.

Exactly. Having owned and sold a 3186 I'd take a 3185 any day. The hype around the 3186 in the 16710 and 16570 is lunacy.

As premiums increase I'd be concerned of movements being swapped for profit.

People aren't paying a premium because the 3186 is better than the 3185. Has nothing to do with movement quality. By modern Rolex standards it is rare. Less than 30K made by most estimates. That means in 30 years there will probably only be 10K or so of them that are unpolished or on a single RSC refinish and in top shape.

10K may sound like a lot but there are millions of Rolex fans and tens of thousands of collectors worldwide.

That's it. My guess is, and this is as an owner (full disclosure), in 25 years the 25K they are at today will seem like a tremendous bargain. Time will tell. I wear mine and love it.

To the OP, I would say get what your heart tells you. The rarity of the 16710 with 3186 means it’s always going to fetch a premium if you do ever decide to sell it and with the way prices are going it will invariably continue to rise. Good luck with your decision.

I can see why you would want the older 5 digit GMT, but what do you really need the 3186 for? Collectibility is one thing, but I do not think anybody here has a complaint on the 3185 workhorse.

Good for you. A strong desire for the right piece of history (for you) has got to be a big chunk of what collecting is all about. Strength of your convictions. If that’s what you think is right and any purchase is not going to put you in peril, then it’s a nice hunt to follow. Hope you get what you want.

Some might think you’re nuts but I like the way you’re approaching this. That’s how you build meaningful historic collections and engage in frustrating self torture. Tell us how you go.

Any specific reason you need the 3186? The premium for them is pretty crazy and you're really boxing yourself in with that need.
