incoming 5170G-010

my first incoming post since being a new member...

The Patek Philippe ref. 5170G-010 (2015-2017) is spectacular and in my view what the heritage of the brand is all about. The watch is styled as a dressy classic chronograph in a well proportioned 39.4mm white gold polished case.

The dial is a deep ebony black opaline masterpiece that carries a high gloss that must be seen at a variety of angles and light to be fully appreciated. Contrast is artfully provided by the use of a pure white outer track, font, sub dials, and perfectly crafted main chrono hand that just pops in all the right ways.

The balance is evident upon first glance, featuring running seconds and 30 minute chrono registers expertly sized at 9 and 3 o’clock respectively. The registers are stepped down creating an ever so slight depth that helps to draw your eye to the beautifully crafted silver leaf shaped sub dial hands.

The pulsations or doctor’s markings are gone from this version making way for enhanced Breguet numerals that are mesmerizing to look at as they play tricks on your eyes and almost seem to float between the dial and glass.

The vintage inspired oval shaped pushers are reminiscent of the iconic 130 model. They have a satin brushed finish with beautifully polished tops that create an almost visual instruction of how they will glide into the case. Upon activating the pushers you can’t help but get the feeling you have launched a hot knife into a perfectly formed cold stick of butter.

The display back highlights the in house certified manually wound CH 29-535 PS movement measuring in at only 5.35mm in thickness, it stunningly features 33 jewels and 11 bridges in this 269 part technical symphony.

The movement features a host of new patents, I think the most special include a new design shape for both the teeth of the chronograph and clutch wheels. Overall this enables a smoothness that eliminates the slight jump that can occur at the start of a chronograph and helps to reduce friction during operation to give the hands the opportunity to move more effortlessly. But innovation wasn’t limited to just starting the movement and enabling it to run, attention was paid to how best to stop as well. Patek added a finger clutch lever to enhance how the blocking lever stops the chronograph’s wheel. Simply put, the result is art in motion.

The watch is paired with a shiny black alligator strap with square scales, completing its definitive classic dress look. With the fold over deployant clasp it wears unbelievably balanced and comfortable.

for me ... pure joy.

Congrats and nice writeup. The 5170 series is under-rated imo and this is a beauty. Before 5170p I was also eyeing this version but in RG case.
